Being so unnaturally sensitive as to cry about the term "oriental" surely must qualify as some psychological disorder somewhere.

Let me through in another wrench.

Filipinos are really Pacific Islanders/Polynesians. Some older Filipino's refer to us as Latins. :)

I always through people for a loop when they ask my backround with that. Lately, I've just fucked with people and tell them I"m half Samoan and Swedish. You should see the open mouth stares I get. :)

koreanbbque 04-19-2005 02:01 PM

I just say that i'm German.

Not even bringing what term offends into it, Overture reports over 160,000 searches for "asian sex" compared to around 7500 searches for "oriental sex". The ratio's about the same for all Asian niches I target, so I know which word I'll be sticking with.

"Oriental" has always made me uncomfortable when it comes to referring to people, anyway. :2 cents:

sickkittens 04-19-2005 03:22 PM

People who allow things to be offensive make them offensive.

Carlin said something to that effect.

Which word is that then? If you had a brain as a marketer you would calculate both the supply and demand of each of the terms instead of mindlessly going with the one having the most searches.

Pay me $500 and I'll give you 5 minutes of ICQ conversation on the subject. :1orglaugh

I am ok being called a fag so long as it is in the straight way.

WTF? I used a very broad term as an example. If an Asian niche I target only gets a couple thousand searches a month and the "Oriental" version of the same phrase gets ten, I'm not going to worry too much about the Oriental version.

I have zero pages that target the phrase "asian sex", btw. It was an example. Yes, I have a brain (ok, maybe half a brain) and no, I'm not going to argue with you about it. :drinkup

You took my unreasonably harsh post rather gentleman-like. You are a rare breed around these parts.

May you have a good day, garce.

No problem. I don't post much here because I'm not interested in drama or flame wars, but I've been around long enough to know everyone is fair game :) No offense taken, and I appreciate your last response.

Take care.

Being part Asian I can honestly say that It bothers me to be called Oriental. The reason being is because the term "Oriental" to me is an adjective used to describe objects rather than people. Oriental food, Oriental rug, Oriental statue, etc. When someone calls me oriental it's like their respect for me is no more than an object rather than a person and it does bother me.

It's somewhat the same as calling an African American the N-word. It shows them as belongings or just objects rather than actual living human beings. When the Chinese were building the railroads they were commonly referred to as Orientals...they were slaves and the connotation still sticks when someone uses that phrase.

That's just my opinion on the subject.

I agree... oriental or asian is fine!

Pornwolf 04-19-2005 05:38 PM

Is the phrase, "I had some Oriental pussy last night" wrong?

If so then I am ashamed.

DWB 04-19-2005 06:53 PM

People are just too damn sensitive these days.

Yep...that is how most Asian people I know feel.

Interestingly, the term "American" is considered insulting when applied to US citizens if you are abroad; this is due to the Latin American countries feeling US citizens are obnoxious in taking ownership of an entire hemisphere :)

Your wife is cool. Does she have a sister?

L0stMind 04-20-2005 08:42 AM

My fiancee doesnt really care she said, but she'd prefer chinese over asian or oriental. I think up here *chink* is probably the most degrading term used for chinese.

I think using the word oriental to describe a person is just an incorrect or outdated usage, not really insulting. Like calling native americans Indians....
