Audiophiles, what is new and hot for creating music? (Reason, Cakewalk, etc.)

I need something that will allow me to place notes on a staff one-by-one or something that has a keyboard built in (so I can use my mouse, not a controller).

I would like to creat full-length tracks.

I used to use Cakewalk, but I have no clue which version I need to do this, they have so many choices now.

So basically, if I wanted to creat music completely from scratch, what would you recommend?

Thanks all

Cakewalk Sonar would be your best bet, especially since you're used to the interface. That's what I use and have been very happy with it.

Tried cubase, didn't like it very much. Sonar does everything that I need: vst+dxi plugins, samples, etc etc

OK, so Sonar has the built-in little piano roll thingy (have no idea what it's called now-a-days) where you can select an voice and place notes in your score via a clickable keyboard?

edit - and do I need producer or studio?

Here's a comparison:
http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/studio.asp

Also, try it out to see if you like it before spending the cash. I'd also get Cubase trial to see if you like that more. I've been using Cakewalk products for many years so that's what i'd recommend, lots of others will swear by Cubase.

You'll love soft synths and samples

Check out what the samples can do, it's crazy:
