Question for Paysite owners...

When starting a paysite, is it better to offer a trial membership, or hit the surfer up for the full amount right from the get go?

Any advice on paysites is greatly appreciated.

Like most of the questions asked on this and other boards, the answer depends. If you have a killer tour and unique content available nowhere else, you might try just hitting 'em up for the full amount. Otherwise, a trial would seem the way to go.

I agree 100% with Unseen. It totally depends on the site. For instance, I own an amateur teen paysite that converts like crazy with any kind of traffic I give it. I have tried it both with a trial and without a trial, and my conversion rate stays just around 1:200 either way! So, I make MUCH more money with NO trial for that particular site.

Bottom line is to try it both ways and see which way makes more money for your particular site.

Set it up without a trial.... and if they exit without signing up, pop a console and offer a trial then.

Marie and I run a paysite with a 7 day trial - we get about 40% rebill on the trial - but I like Amp's idea - we might just try that

I think it's better to start with trial. Surfers just love "free" stuff.

I say fuck a trial membership. If you have something that someone wants to buy and give them a choice of paying a few dollars or paying 20 - 30 dollars, what do you think most will choose? Once the surfer joins your site his "retention" will basically be the same. If a surfer doesn't join your site because you don't have a trial, chances are he's not going to recur anyways, so you might as well get the full price up front. I think it's fair to say that over half of your new signups will not recur. (50% is good imo) So say you get 100 signups a day. Would you rather have 400 dollars (4.00 trial) or 2400 dollars??? (24.00 membership).

IMO trial memberships are more for the SUPER BIG SITES that know that they can retain a customer a long time as well as a marketing strategy to get webmasters pushing their programs. (i.e.: big$ per signup programs)

But hey whatever works go for it! I did and am very happy with the amount of extra money it generated for me as well as for my partners pushing my program.

I don't own a paysite, but if I did I wouldn't offer a trial. After reading this I like how BV is thinking...and I like Amp's idea.

To take it a step further, has anyone ever found certain niche's that do or don't need trials? Does that make sense?

I agree this is better than advertizing it up front, but most paysite tours are designed to get the surfer to the signup page on every page. So chances are your little secret will be detected early on from a serious buyer. I have sent traffic to programs that do just that and 90% of my signups were still trials.
Just think if there were NO trials anywhere??
Trials Suck.
Some times I think they were just invented by some webmasters a long time ago as an easier way to fuck the surfer in rebills back before the CC companies started issuing heavy fines on all that crap, who knows....

Bottom line. No Trial = Mo Money

Don't be so closed minded man... trials are not necessarily a bad thing. It's much easier to convince someone to spend $3.95 or whatever, than $29.95 or $39.95 straight outta the box... the idea behind it is to get them to sign up... period. Hopefully they will get too busy or whatever, and forget to cancel before the trial is up... hence, the kicking in of rebilling... there really is some thought behind it man.

But hey... all I was trying to say is hit 'em for the full price in the tour, and if the close out of the signup page without buying, then slap a trial console on 'em as a last ditch effort... I'd rather take a chance on them forgetting to cancel than not getting a signup at all.

But then, I don't know shit.... I'm just a designer. You guys promote them however you like, in whatever ways make you money. I just offer up my advice and opinions on what I would do... doesn't mean it's right.

The New Bottom Line: No signups, (trial or not) = No Chance For Money.

I'm sure you know plenty. I'm just voicing my opinion on what worked for me and explaining why I think so. Nothing against you at all. I just really think trials suck. Just think how much more money everyone would have made today if every signup was full price?
