I know people who do this and AREN'T into torture/BDSM play.
This is very often, (at least in my experience), a very spiritual thing for both parties. Much like BDSM play, pain releases endorphins into one's system, and the rush is very uplifting.
The human body is incredibly resiliant. It's amazing to see people doing suspensions or play piercings find their "zone." To see someone who wants to let go of his earthly bonds, who is absolutely terrified of doing so, finding excuses not to lift his toes off the floor only to find out that while he was finding excuses, he'd already lifted his feet enough to be completely airborne...that realization and the calm, or sometimes screaming in uter joy and release...it's another one of the things that I find beautiful.
Some people are able to find release without any body modification, whether through art, orgasm, or some other manner. Then there are those of us who find that release through pain or the deliverance thereof.
Don't knock it, (not aimed at tASSy, mind you. A general statement). Just because my kink is different than yours doesn't make mine any less right for me. However you attain your flight is fine with me as long as I get to fly too.
