TheFLY's long trip...

Probably not too many people care but I made it back home safely from LA -- 3 days of steady driving... Damn gas is cheap now... in some states gas was $.97 for the cheap stuff -- I averaged about $14/tank of premium -- took me about 7 tanks from Pasadena, CA to Gainesville, FL...

Why are gas prices so low after 9-11? Hmmm...

Not much else to report... My little GTI has made this trip x-country from Florida to LA, 6 times now with zero problems... I was suprised to see large patches of snow on the ground all through western Texas... My favorite place to eat and take a shit along I-10 is this little restuarant next to the Texaco in Crockett, Texas (basically it's out in the middle of fucking nowhere) Texas is not friendly to travelers -- instead of "rest stops" you get "picnic areas" -- cheap asses can't even afford bathroom doors for the toilets. I'm pretty sure Texas must be 1000 miles long -- it's a long bitch of a drive. If you want to shit in Texas on I10, stop at this little restuarant -- they've got huge delicious hamburgers -- this time I had the "farm-fresh catfish" -- yummy!

Anyway I have lots of bills to pay now -- the Dept. of Education is after my ass...

Good times.

Your trip reminded me the trip i had from gainesville,fl to San Diego. We had only 7 days (last spring break) of holiday so we were 3 friends driving non-stop (we only stopped to buy gas, food and we slept in the car while one of us was driving) We went there in 34 hours and came back in 36. Texas is really too big and totally empty, especially the fucking desert takes so much time to pass. But the good thing is with a good quality radar detector, you can pass the desert averaging 100-110 mph. We only had a ticket in El paso, texas for careless driving, and changing the lanes without signaling. We completed the trip in 7 days driving like crazy all over the I10.

Btw, we were driving a golf gti which is a total disaster. This car's top speed is around 122 mph (beleive me the engine was about to blow out) and when you compare to the european version of the car; the ones in the usa has older technology. The european version of the car can go up to 140 easily. And the car does not has an overdrive technology thats why the rpms were up to 4-5 even when you are making 90-100 which fucks up mpg.

Yeah mine has only 5 speeds so it's getting in high rpms at 120mph in 5th -- it's a 2000 1.8turbo -- synthetic oil and premium gas keeps it singing sweet but I think the engine hum at 122mph would probably get into my bones after a full day of driving ;) Road vibration and the engine hum will really fuck you up especially when you're already tired... but you would probably be a lot worse in some growling sportscar like a Camero -- my friend can't drive his on long trips w/o feeling like vomiting hehe...

I was born in Fort Worth Tx. and I believe
it's like 600+ miles to El Paso with not much of any thing in between.
Never drove it but have a lot of friends that
have and none of them liked it.

Shit I use to go on service calls in Texas
that were in the total middle of no were, get to the rancher's cattle ranch, ask were is the Scale, he'd point to a speck
on the horizon.
Before you can work on the scale, better have a very good flash light, to find the Rattle Snake's under the cattle
scale. Fun Fun.
Hell with Texas I like California.
