for laptops i wouldnt really worry about brand, ive never heard of many major faults with them.

just go to best buy and tell them the price range you have in mind and ask them to show you what they got... thats the best way to do it, you're there in person, you get to play with it, you know the specs, etc

even a gateway is fine for a laptop lol

Go with a Thinkpad. Of course, they are not exactly cheap though.
Avoid Acer at all costs...

I say Dell. I have been researching them lately. They have the best battery life I have found.

I have a toshiba. best value for the money.
I've read a lot of reviews before I got my toshiba, everyone wrote dell has cheap looking keyboard . A friend of mine has an inspiron (8600 ? ) and the video card was fucked in 2 months, so dell is not good in my books.

I have an m35-s320 bought it for $1800 that time, now it's like $1400.
whatever brand you buy get a centrino, they're BADASS.

DELL is awesome, if you like to make eggs from the heat coming off the thing. I used to have one and the thing got so friggin hot that you literally cannot have it sitting on top of your legs. It is also so hot that you cannot place it flatly on a surface. The fan is loud and it would take a temp of about 130 degrees before the f'ing thing would decide to turn on... I am thinking.. hmm.. shouldn't this thing come on either right away or at around 80 degrees? Luckly someone coded an app to control the fan and I'd just have it run all the time so it'd stay at about 90 and then you can use it like normal. DELL of course were assholes about the app (because supporting the app would mean they are acknowledging the problem) and so they would delete the link to it from their support forum almost as soon as someone who post it (Thanks Google cache)... but thats just my humble opinion. I also have an HP and love it.

DELL XPS 3.4 ghz, 2 gig ram, 60 gig ide 7200 harddrive. Its a workstation you can carry with you, weighs like 9 pounds but ohh boy does it fly. I just see it a waste of time having a workstation and a laptop, just get this beasty ass laptop and you'll never need another workstation.

Pretty reasonable prices too.

Well dont' know about battery life but my DELL XPS 3.4 ghz beast runs pretty cool even while playing Counterstrike for 6 hours straight. Comes with built in heatdespenser. Also the Dell keyboards are very nice at least on my one they are. No experience with other Dell cheaper laptops, I did like my Tosiba but Dell doesn't install half the crap that Compaq's and Tosiba's install so the machines run faster.

I have a VERY old Toshiba - about the size of a house brick. Totally redundant now but performed really well.

I'm thinking of getting a Sony Vaio widescreen but am not 100% sure

I replaced my vaio with a toshiba. I have one of the 17 inch widescreens. I will not buy another toshiba. The vaio was great but they are very fragile. I had an IBM once and it was a tank. I would get another sony or another ibm and NOT another toshiba.

I dont understand why anyone needs a widescreen notebook... they just waste power on an already short battery life. Good for movies I guess

I have Vaio, Dell, Toshiba, and Compaq...but my favorite 'average' laptop has been the Averatec (google it)...they are available at US retailers, like Circuit City and Best Buy, and they are very low priced...

Also, they do not come with AOL, Pre-Installed Microsoft Money, Encarta, and the other 600 pre-installed applications that most laptops come with...
