I keep hearing horror stories about how its a fucking fiasco.

Is it really that big of a pain in the ass? Anyone know the tricks to a smooth delivery?

shipping electronics to Canada is the nightmare. Customs will hold it longer than necessary sometimes for no apparent reason and then charge the person it's going to an arm and a leg for it no matter if it's a "gift" or not.

I'm still waiting for a copy of the Paris Hilton video I won about 8 months ago on The Darren Austin Show.

We used to have boxes of sextoys shipped up here though and never had a problem receiving them.

Heres the mst important thing to remember..

Never trust the company sending you something, that it will arrive for the price shown.

The biggest problem most people have is CUSTOMS. you must pay duty for many items and the price is different depending on the item. Things like computers/bikes/skateboards have a super high customs rate.

Best to ask customs or make sure the shipper has experience shipping to canada.

I had a friend have that problem ordering something from ebay..

The winning bid was low like $20 , but the item was worth a few hundred , and they wanted to charge them $50 in duty fee's.

Eventually they managed to get their money back.(after first having to pay it )

Now when i ship items from the states , i get them to write EBAY-PURCHASE on the customs declaration and make up a low price

Thanks everyone. I'm actually looking to ship some jerseys I plan on giving away as gifts during the Montreal show, that is if I'm allowed in. Do they even allow Mexicans in Canada?

Its a real pain in the ass when going through customs. A lot of times we'll get nailed for duties on gift based items and if you're sending electronics, that's a whole other ballpark. Best thing to do is to ship through a courrier who has experience in dealing with customs.

Anything but UPS...UPS will rape you with their brokerage fee, FedEx is not as bad. Best is USPS/Canada Post, it's only a $5 brokerage fee, but taxes/duties still applies.

We had a company ship a Cisco router from the USA to Canada.
It went via Fedex... it was a TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!!

Cost a fortune in duties and taxes the leasing company made us pay.
Should have bought one in Canada.

its not a fiasco at all. but you have to do some extra work at the time of shipping....state the $$ value of the product and include an invoice with the shipment. The duty, GST and broker charge will be paid by the receiver in Canada. DHL, FEDEX, UPS and USPS can do it for you..

if you can, ship Via Air - many times brokerage fees are covered in the cost. Shop around, ask questions. In Canada the # 1 courier is Purolator. They have the best rates, best network and reliability. Fed Ex is good but expensive IMHO. UPS Great in the states not so good in Canada - brokerage fees = RAPE
