Republicans want jail time, not fines, for offending people on cable TV, radio

The chairman of one of the entertainment industry's most important congressional committees says he wants to take the enforcement of broadcast decency standards into the realm of criminal prosecution, Reuters reported.

Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner III, R-Wis., told cable industry executives attending the National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. conference on Monday that criminal prosecution would be a more efficient way to enforce the indecency regulations, according to the report.

Although cable and satellite TV are not covered by the indecency statutes, Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, have said they want to bring multi-channel programmers into the legal mix, Reuters reported.

Where are all of the Republican GFY members to defend this? Hopefully you Republican sheep will end up in jail first.

I doubt it'll make it to the floor, but it certainly does give a clear and accurate picture of the kind of world some people want to live in...

One people...
One empire...
One leader...

America will be much safer once Howard Stern is sentenced to life in prison for making lesbian jokes on satellite radio.

Sensenbrenner also said he did not support efforts to expand federal decency standards to subscription television and radio services as suggested by other House and Senate lawmakers but encouraged cable operators to do more to promote ways that parents can block unsavory programming they do not want.

"The first thing we need is education has got to get better, he said. "You can't expect the government to replace parental responsibility."

He said it was "far better" for consumers to press a button on their remote control to lock out programs or channels than for the government to set the standard.

But he admitted that if Congress put it up for a vote soon while the controversy was hot, there was a good chance they would approve expanding decency standards.

i agree with putting people in jail for offenses any regular person would get thrown in jail for. as i said, i disagree with their "decency standards".
if a company, mistakenly or not, throws up nudity during the disney hour someone should get the same punishment we'd get knowingly showing the same material to children. women in bikinis or cursing is pointless bullshit that these bible thumpers think is ruining society. they need to just gfy and stop trying to cram it down our throats as "decency"
