Wow, ISPrime's capacity is now 45 Gigabit

ISprime, a leader in managed service solutions, today announced completion of its most recent network upgrade. ISprime network now consists of 4 10 Gigabit redundant connections as well as 5 Gigabit connections to Tier 1 Transit Carriers. This upgrade increases ISprime total capacity to 45 Gigabit. I really never believe anyone that claims they have 100% uptime.. You can claim it all you want, but what happens when a construction crew down the street from your data center happens to dig up all 5 of your fiber lines? (which can happen because it happened to me)

I know you guys are top notch and are on my list of hosts if I ever need a new one.. But I think it's ridiculous when host's claim 100% uptime.. There is just far too many things that can go wrong that is out of the host's hands.

Well like I said I'm not disputing they are a very good host.. I know they are one of the best. They also have a very excellent track record (probally one of the best track records for adult hosts in uptime). I'm just pointing out there are things that can happen that is out of the control of the host.

It's a bit different than you describe. It's the easier path to go down if you actually have traffic levels that require it (versus getting 45 * Gig-E), however, it is non-trivial to set up 10ge links in today's world. Most networks are built from routers/switches from years past that do not support links of this size. It requires a large investment to upgrade networks to handle this, and even if you are willing to do it, your carriers may not be. Most Tier1 and large Tier2 networks are not profitable as it is, they usually don't want to spend money on upgrading their routers unless they have no choice. In this case, the political battle to get transit carriers to upgrade their infrastructure was the easier path than continually upgrading gig-e by gig-e. Larger hosts will probably migrate at some point, but to those who are doing 1-2 gbits, or less (which is most hosts), Forgetting even the political battle with their carriers, they probably are in no position to spend multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars themselves.

Also to keep in mind, many hosts probably use metro ethernet for their gig-e's, no one is selling metro-10ge, so that means you either need to use dark fiber (expensive, hard to get), or DWDM wave's, which is quite costly at 10gbits.

That being said, everyone's doing more traffic now, and it's only a matter of time before Gig-E is considered to be as small as Fast-E is today.

With ISPrime, expect to see some new announcements soon, there's still stuff in the pipeline.
