So, I decided to be a little adventrous and buy some asparagaous. They have along stem that is about 10 inches. Do I cook the entire thing, or just the head? The stem seems to be thick. And how do i cook it? I wanted to fry it with olive oil. Anything special I should know? Thanks!
What part of asparagus to eat? How to cook it?

I've never had them fried before. I'm not sure if that will add anything to the taste of it. Especially the green ones are pretty tasteful by themselves. But why not take two apart and try to fry them.Originally posted by AsylumNwhat about frying it in olive oil? wouldnt that taste better?>Comment

Dude you just made me hungry!!Originally posted by garceI like them steamed myself. Trim off the bottom inch or so, lightly sprinkle with salt (to retain colour), steam till tender (just a few minutes), top with a little butter or margarine. Serve, enjoy.

If the ends of the stem are woodsy looking and feel fiberous peel the ends with a regular potato peeler. From your pic it doesnt look like they are. You can saute them in olive oil, steam them, roast them (toss in oil 1st), many ways to cook them. If you do steam them I would toss them in a hot saute pan with some butter after they are steamed to add to the flavor. Bon appetite!

All of it.. but I would suggest ppeeling the stalks of the hard outer flesh with a potato peeler. If you want a nice change... melt some margerine or butter in a shallow pan... Add some lemon juice and some spices, throw in the asparagus, and let it lightly cook for a while.. Then as you're ready to serve it, throw some parmesan cheese on.. killer good stuff.Comment

The half you threw away would have made some good soup!Originally posted by Tony MontanaI cut off the top half and scrap the bottom part

I eat the whole thing. I love them grilled... steamed is great too. Oil/vinegar or lemon. Or in an egg omlette!

1st they naturally snap where they should be cut. Bend one near the bottom and where it snaps is the correct place.
If you are to boil them. Get the water salted some and bring to a boil. Place them in an leave them for only about 2 minutes. Take them out and dunk them in ice water, then drop them back into the boiling water for an additional 1-2 minutes. This preserves the color and over cooked asparagus is just nasty, it should be a little al dente.
I personally think they taste best when served with regular mayonaise as a dipping sauce.Comment

don't freak out when you take a piss later on as eating asparagus makes it smell funny.
only part i hate about eating asparagus
simple way to cook:
throw some olive oil or butter in a frying pan with a lid, add asparagus (trim an inch or so from the bottom) seasoning and some lemon juice, cover and simmer slowly until tenderComment
