Mega Tsunamis: Interesting Read

This was on a TV special recently. Fascinating especially considering it happened in Alaska (albeit some 50 years ago):

Quote:
In 1958 there was a landslide, in which a towering cliff collapsed into the bay, creating a wave half a kilometre high, higher than any skyscraper on Earth.

I watched that show. What was amazing is the man and his son who were in a boat at the front of the wave, it washed them halfway up a mountain and they both survived.

Yea, that was the show I saw too. They figured out how high it was by the tree lines on the mountains. I can't even imagine what that must have looked like - they said on the show the wave was 400 feet high, I believe!

Yep, that La Palma Volcano is going to be a mother!

Do a Google for 'La Palma Volcano' or 'Atlantic Tsunami'. Crazy shit.

What will happen when the volcano on La Palma collapses? Scientists predict that it will generate a wave that will be almost inconceivably destructive, far bigger than anything ever witnessed in modern times. It will surge across the entire Atlantic in a matter of hours, engulfing the whole US east coast, sweeping away everything in its path up to 20km inland. Boston would be hit first, followed by New York, then all the way down the coast to Miami and the Caribbean.

Fo shizzle

If a landslide tsunami happened, the waves would most certainly not "pass underneath"! More like, crash over the ship at 500+ feet high...

It's the combination of the speed of the landslide hitting the water and the shallowness of the lake that makes it so deadly - this wouldn't happen out at sea where there is far more water and it's obviously much deeper.

What I meant was a ship in deep water. with that kindof shockwave passing beneath.
