Canadian truck spills human waste in Michigan

FLAT ROCK, Mich. ? A truck from a Canadian treatment plant spilled human waste in a Michigan community today, spreading the sludge across an entire block, the city's police chief said.

Chief Steve Tallman of Flat Rock police said the spill at about 6 a.m. EST closed two southbound lanes of Telegraph Road, a major artery, and drew hazardous material crews from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. He could not estimate how much had spilled, but called the amount "substantial."

"It looks like the truck driver locked his brakes, and the stuff went flying forward over the cab," Tallman said. "Just be glad it isn't July."

The hazardous materials crews were cleaning up the sludge. The truck was headed to a landfill in Wayne County's Sumpter Township, Tallman said.

No one was hurt. Tallman said the driver was expected to charged with spilling on a public highway, a misdemeanour. The city will bill the company for the cleanup, Tallman said.

Hundreds of truckloads of trash enter Michigan from Canada each day.
