It's not an immediate solution but here's what you can do to improve your credit. As soon as you have some bucks you can put aside, apply for a credit card that you can give a security deposit on - (say $500.00 limit - you give $1000.00 in security) Use that card and pay off your balance monthly - don't go crazy keep a balance for one month then make your payment (don't always leave it at zero or it doesn't give you a credit score). After about 1 year or more, you should have better credit even if you're still young.

Relax Chris, this was a learning experience. Be happy you didn't lose more. Bust your ass this week and pick up an extra $500, there's your new computer. Do it again next week, pay off some of your newly acquired debt.

Keep on keepin' on...

don't spend money you don't have, it will keep you out of trouble. debt/loans are evil, i refuse to take part in them. i won't buy a car until i have the cash, same with computers, ect. i hope to do the same with a house but that might be a bit harder.

JupZChris, most of us have been there before, I remember my bank cutting up my credit card before my eyes once. I was at university at the time and things were kinda tough for me.

It gets better as you get older, wiser and richer

Everybody goes through fucked up periods in their life. Could be a business failure, a divorce, identity theft, bad partners, health problems, accidents that make it impossible for you to work or run your biz, depression, etc.

I don't know hardly anyone who hasn't had bad credit at least one point in their life. Its very rare.

You just have to rebuild and figure its going to be 7 years to have all the muck cleared off.

Best thing to do is not live beyond your means. Don't buy expensive toys on credit. Only cash on those. Only use credit if you have plenty of cash reserves and can go a year with no income and just living off your savings.

dude, I told you... you can get a great machine built for around $300-400

You can always go to Walmart and get a new machine for around $500 if you insist on having one already built. Put it on lay away

You would only have to give the credit card compnay $500 not a thousand but there is a better way to establish credit and do it quicker than with one credit card reporting to equifax etc.

Here is what you do. Go to your bank and tell them you want to borrow $500.00 and they will ask you for security. tell them you will open a $500.00 CD as colateral for the loan. Note you are making money (even if it is only a little bit) on the deposit that is securing the loan and they will be happy to do it because the CD is at their bank. Next, take the $500.00 they give you and go to another major bank and do the same thing. Repeat this 3 more times and you have 5 major banks all reporting to equifax, etc. You establish good credit faster and even if you have 5 payments/mo. for 12 months your payments will probably not be more than $50.00 for each account totalling payments of $300.00/mo. At the end after you have paid all the loans off you also have $2500.00 worth of CDs that have been earning money for 1 year. You also get to claim that the CDs are savings accounts on future credit applications which looks good too.

Basically, it costs you about $1,000.00 for the year after you cash in the CDs to establish a decent credit history.

Screw credit - of any kind!! :-)

That is much easier said than done, especially if you live in a country with a "credit culture".

Give ya a clue.... the current CEO of VISA was interviewed... and this guy was amazingly open and I suspect, he don't have a lot of subtlety.

He admitted the name of the game is to "capture" as many people as possible on credit cards, because, his words, "at some time in their lives they will exceed their credit terms and we have them". This is little more than legalized loan sharking on a grand scale and with a public that has been "taught" :-)

VISA now have several new programs operating, cos they can't find the volume of retards in the west. So, they are offering Russian seniors credit cards to get 10% off the Moscow subway fees and reductions in scripts. Rest assured, - this benevolence is not as it appears to be.

Clues:

(a) Plastic is fine... as long as that is paid in full every month without fail.

(b) Never give anyone, even your relatives/friends, money that you do not have to give and, never think you will get it back :-)

(c) Avoid all store cards with "low interest deals" - they are only in place to scam ya at some point.

(d) Don't even consider buying even a Big Mac unless you can afford it and have actual *cash*.

(e) Easier said than done - get a stash of cash built up and shoot anyone who ever puts that into jeopardy - that's your "backup money". It does not matter if you got $5mill in assets - liquid cash matters.

I ain't got any "credit" and have no wish to have - I don't need it and it's got fuck all to to with credit agencies - they are just scum feeders for card company activities. Sure, I've got plastic - but no way does a card company earn a dime of interest. I am please to not use that slogan line from Amex - "that will do nicely!":-) I threw their cards back to em - they serve no purpose and just fill the trash with financial promo shit.

When you have a balance in any bank - they will do whatever you want and accomodate you, else move. Cash is King - always will be.

I'm not that familiar with the US credit system, but: wouldn't taking out several loans in quick succession throw up flags when the banks further down the shortlist do their credit checks?

I had an application for a store card rejected, and it was most likely because,
(a) the bank where we applied for a home loan did an enquiry TWICE under slightly different company names
and
(b) the second enquiry was the day before I applied for the store card.
