ahahahahaha... i was just in the supermarket and was giving the check out girl a hard time... anyway, she said "women, you can't live with them, you can't live without them" and i quickly shot back "no, but we can definately take the feeding tube out of your mouth". you could have heard a pin drop in there. i haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

You might notice the dark, undetailed area in the center of her cranium. That area is no longer brain matter, it's a sack of cerebral-spinal fluid. In essence, a significant portion of her brain has turned to liquid, specifically the higher-order portions that make a person a person. Some arguments have been advanced that an MRI would yield more detail of the interior of the skull, but it's fairly evident that even with the comparatively rudimentary images produced here that the inside her cranium has been hollowed out due to the complications of her oxygen deprevation.

It's a sad sad thing what's happened to her. It's an even sadder thing that her family is caught in a struggle of grief, love, loss and acceptance. It's a disgusting, vile, hateful thing that petty fucks use her situation to promote their own cause celebre... if there is such a thing as hell, then truly these maggots have their own special place set aside there.

Be that as it may, unless science or some sort of divine intervention manages to convert that fluid into some 600-odd grams of neural matter is not now, and likely will not ever, be rejoining the world of conscious thought. I'd further suggest that in the unlikely event the brain matter DID regenerate, she'd be a completely different person from before the accident... given that all her higher order functions would not only have to be regrown physically, but retrained essentially 'from birth'. The chances of the newly grown brain having the same neural pathways as the original would be even more vanishingly small than the already near-impossibility of regrowth.

Oh, and just in case this is ever needed some years down the road after a tragic accident or illness, I don't want to be kept alive in that situation. Exhaust all reasonable medical techniques to bring me back, but if I'm messed up beyond saving just let me die with some measure of dignity. I'd appreciate painkillers, even if you don't think I need them.

If those scans are truly of her brain, then yeah.. she's little more than a pet...
that being said, her parents see her respond to things, and, she's their little girl...

it's hard to kill her when she responds, no matter the pain... not easy to put your dog down, is it?

I've had to do that... it was extraordinarily painful to give the go ahead to end the life of a family member, even one lower on the evolutionary ladder. My choice was made somewhat easier in that she was in excruciating pain and for as hard as it was to give the go ahead, it was the right thing to do.

I'm no neurologist, so I can't speak to the 'responses', but from what I understand from researching what her countless doctors and specialists have said, a 'response' is not an indicator of higher order brain function and more of a reflexive thing, like the pupil of the eye dialating in accordance with light variations. Obviously her brain stem survived mostly unaffected or her autonomous functions (breathing, heartbeat) would be impaired, but even some of those functions were damaged irreparably, such as her ability to swallow... which lead to the existance of the tube to begin with.

Her ability to swallow is one point of contention swirling about in the air of ill-will generated by this circus side-showesque political/media orgy. Turns out that Jeb Bush assigned a Stetson University professor named Jay Wolfson to act as guardian ad litem to Terri, assess her situation and the 'facts on the ground' and report back. His report concluded that yes, she was in a persistant vegetative state, but advocated additional testing to see if she had re-developed the ability to swallow. Chief Circuit Judge David A. Demers dismissed Wolfson after receiving the report, but didn't further order such a test be performed.

Keep in mind that even if her ability to swallow was 100%, she wouldn't be able to eat solid foods. Mastication is a voluntary, non-reflexive action. It would allow the tube to be removed from her stomach and for food-fluids to be inserted orally.
