Not to quibble, but MMA itself isn't just BJJ. It is a mixture of that consists of: Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Sambo, and BJJ.

The biggest joke in MMA circles is that a BJJ Black Belt can knock someone out with a punch and his whole camp will be screaming ZZZZZHHHOOOO ZZZZHHHHIIITTTSSSUUUU!

Before anyone goes off on a tangent on me, I train in Jits.

Id still like to see Gracie go against a heavyweight boxer .. like Tyson in his prime... You see when Gracie charges the guy.. his head his down... A good lightning fast and powerfull heavywight boxer could have made him pay big time with an uppercut or two... (especially with those tiny ultimate fighting gloves)

Challenge was made to Tyson at his prime by Royce Gracie. Never accepted.

Before Royce, his father and founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Helio Gracie challenged the Brown Bomber Joe Louis, that was also never accepted.

If you think a good uppercut will stop a shoot when you are busy worrrying whether or not that kick thrown at you is gonna collapse your knee, then you are wrong.

A shoot is setup by a move or attack to put the opponent off balance.

Art Jimmerson and Butterbean have fought NHB, they got taken down. Jens Pulver is a pro boxer/MMA fighter, there are plenty of decent boxers that have tried their luck.

It's a fuck of a lot harder to hit someone on a shoot than you think, and it's even harder to knock them out with one shot. Boxing's great as long as the fight stays off the ground, but it rarely will. You have better luck catching someone shooting on you with a knee than with your fist.

Most all of them will be pussies. Getting beaten does nothing for you physically and it destroys you mentally. Pro boxing and MMA training camps, classes in Gracie Academy and anywhere else people are being trained to fight at an elite level, the whole focus of the training is to maximize the fighter's confidence in himself, to make him feel like he is more dangerous than his opponent, WHOEVER that opponent may be. The goal is to build the fighter up, not tear him down.

Kids that get beat by their parents usually turn out fucked up and conflict-averse. Fighters that get beat on in class get beat on in the ring.

Royce takes out Jason Deluce, probably the best american KF guy, who DOES have an IQ bigger than his shoe size and is now a grappler. You can go to Bullshido.com or Sherdog.com and find dozens of videos of KF guys getting pounded.

Basically KF is for guys who believe Bruce Lee was really a ninja, and they can learn the Touch of Death if they can only get thier palm vibrating fast enough. Their hobbies are getting fucked up by any drunk ex-marine in barfights LOL
Pity it's boring as hell to watch... also it's not exactly great if you're fighting more than one person.

I watch boxing for entertainment, I train in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for self defense.

NOTHING is good for multiple attackers if they attack you like they mean it. You're going down, and that's it. I'd still rather use Jits to try to break an arm quick and go to the next guy than match myself up against 4 or 6 fists trying to hit me at once on my feet, but basically if they attack you hard and really come at you you're done. Fortunately, this doesn't happen often. Most multiple attacker situations end up like the one with the skater dude above. They really don't want to fight, they just want to scare someone and when someone fights back they show their true colors.

I'm a big boxing/muay thai fan. Self defense wise I did zen shi ryu with a bit of muay thai and dirty street fighting type stuff. To be honest as long as you learn some type of martial art you'll be ok in a fight, it's not as if your local bar brawl is full of black belts.
But yeah im not disputing the effectiveness of the style, just UFC bores the shit outta me when the grappling comes into effect.

You and Nic Cage have something in common. He trains with Gracie as well. He used to do moves on my that Gracie had taught him.

Nic said that if he were ever in a bar and people started shit with him that he'd be able to take them down. And all the while I kept thinking, 1) when would Nic ever be ina bar by himself?? and 2) who would ever start shit with him? He was one of the coolest guys I ever worked with.

In the particular video posted in this thread... A boxer like Tyson in his prime would have made Gracie pay dearly the way he charged the guy with his head down... bottom line.

As for being afraid of a blow to the knee.. of course.. if a fight happen... the boxer should be trained for at least 2 months, in trying to avoid those, and find ways to counter the chargers...

Not saying an top speedy heavywight boxer would win everytime ... But as a good chance to win everytime..

If you think 2 months is enough time to stop the whole arsenal of take downs that Jits have, then again, you are wrong.

You saw one takedown, which is the double leg or omote gari in judo. I'm not arguing the fact that damage will be done to take shoot on say Tyson. I'd be an idiot.

Look how many times in Boxing a clinch happens. That is what a grappler wants, to get in real close, from there, taking down an untrained, or rather a 2 month trained boxer is quite easy.

Style versus style was proven over 10 years ago in the octagon. Art Jimmerson, a top 10 fighter, once taken down to the ground by Royce Gracie, tapped not to a submission, not to strikes, but because he couldn't breathe and did not know what to do with someone sitting on his chest.

Enough said.

Sorry but Art Jimmerson never was a top 10 boxer... He never beat anyone remotly good.. and since he sarted real fights.. 10 or 12 rounds.. he got KOed EVERYTIME within the first 3 rounds...
Heres his carreer record
http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=002044

So please people .. stop using Art Jimmerson and Butterbean as proof that top heavyweight boxers cannot beat a top JJ fighter...

So please people .. stop using Art Jimmerson and Butterbean as proof that top heavyweight boxers cannot beat a top JJ fighter...
Don't have the patience to go through jimmerson's record on that link regarding his status back in 1993, so I'll let it go.

There is a plethora of empirical data tha supports that strikers of any type will lose to a grappler 9 times out of 10. Earlier MMA fights proved it time and time again. That's why they are referred to now as MIXED Martial Arts. Boxing deals with just one range, once taken out of it, boxing is useless. ie. on the ground.

For the record, Butter bean lost to a 155lbs MMA fighter by the name of Genki Sudo.

It was a farce, watching that fight.

Just got this from Bullshido.com regarding the original clip.

That trainer used to be the original,
legendary Tiger Mask. His name was
Satoru Sayama.

I wonder what Japanese fans think of his
attitude in training these guys.

Though Muay Thai Kicks are used by Sayama and his students, that's actually not in Thailand. It's in Japan, and it's a Shooto school, or what the Japanese have for MMA.

From my understanding he is a brutal teacher, but produces champions.
