How bloody inhumane to starve someone to death. What the fuck. I'm glad the government stepped in to stop this insanity.

I don't buy for a second this girl told him she wants to die either. Did you see this weasle on Larry King tonight. He was full of it.

Let the parents have her back.

I can't even believe people are supporting killing this woman.

It wouldnt be inhumane at all.... She would not starve to death or even dye from dehydration...

She will be pumped full of morphine and have no knowledge of what is happening..... and eventually that will be what finishes her off

Dont tell me that is "euthanasia" and is illegal in the US.... It happens 1000s of times a day in every country in the world, the MAJORITY of people that die in hospital in a non emergancy situation die from opiate overdoses.

Naturally you become detached from someone who doesn't reciprocate any form of emotion for years on end. It is perfectly understandable that he might be with someone else. You can't judge this guy, it isn't right in this situation. Why? Because SHE married him, and took an oath to trust and honor him. *If* there is no possible chance she can be recovered, then the courts have no business in the intervention of his word that she STATED she never wants to be hooked up to tubes.

And I think REGARDLESS of whether or not she said she doesn't want to be hooked up to tube(s), if you are in a vegetative, or near vegetative state, would YOU want to live? I don't think I've EVER heard one person say, "Ah, well If I ever become a vegetable and hooked up with tubes, I WANT TO LIVE!", Nope... the response is ALWAYS, "Hell, pull the plug on me, what kind of life is that?" Which is reasonable, what type of life IS that, living like a shell.

But even in this particular situation, the husband which she fully trusted and honored enough to marry has stated she said she does not want to live like this (for good reason too, no one would want to live like that), should be all the reason in the world to let NATURE TAKE IT'S COURSE - doesn't anyone have the right to DIE ANYMORE?

galleryseek 03-21-2005 09:51 PM

We should protect life. But it does NOT seem like suspending a person in an idle state between existance and non-existance with the use of man-made machinary is protecting life - it is corrupting life. If you wish to protect life in situations like these, you let nature take its course for crying out loud.

We can all stand here and make judgements on that guy, but after 16 years of dealing with this situation... I say he deserves to get on with his life If he gets money (like most of us who have spouses with life insurance policies would)..its not a bad thing.
KRL, just how many years would you want to lay in a bed in a vegetable state?

How many years would you expect people to keep wiping your ass and changing your diaper?

I already told my hubby.. if the situation were similar..DO NOT allow me to live in such a manner..that is not life.. its just existing and breathing air.

You might want to have some official documents drawn up to that effect. I'm sure that had this woman done that there would be no debate.

I had my will drawn up last year, all this is taken care of should anything like this ever happen to me. My wishes are clearcut and plainly stated on a legal document.

How many of you can say the same?

If you can't, you best get busy soon and get it done. Nothing beats having peace of mind in these matters.

want to make a bet that that is the number one document lawyers will be preparing for their clients over the next few months?

missed that Larry King...does seem very odd to deny her parents request to care for her...why not allow it?

I know if it was my child and someone tried to deny me that right I would want their head on a platter...

yeah true, this whole thing is really ignorant...

just because she never wrote her wishes on a piece of paper, everyone is going to assume she wants to live - when i bet in reality nearly 99.9% of people who write those documents state clearly that they do not want to live in a vegetative state - and also disregard her chosen MATE's word that she verbally spoke it out that she wouldn't want to live under those circumstances.

it is plain madness. fucking pure ignorance.

The function of the parent is to raise their children from adolescent to adulthood. Adulthood occurs at the age of 18. From that point FORWARD, it should be completely up to their chosen MATE to make decisions that they can't otherwise make.

Another tough call. Who has the right of way in a situation like this.... the spouse, or the parents?

The spouse probably took a sacred vow and pledged an oath to the person,

while the parents gave life to the person.

I think in most cases the spouse is given the most say. Unless of course it is proven that the spouse is a lying cheating sack of shit self-serving idiot.

I guess 12clicks figures if it's open season on vegetables, he's probably next.

jonpotz 03-21-2005 10:23 PM

who else agrees with me:

Pull the plug on this vegetable...cook her up and put her in Bush's next meal. Maybe he will choke on her bones and die.

Give some of that same meal to Paul Wolfowitz and his newfound World Bank...

Americans, we are fucked. Time to move to canada or netherlands and start our porn empire there.

but for me, blood is blood...I don't think I'm able to divorce my parents or blood relatives as easily as someone in life that I 'choose' to live with until death...

your parents will always be your parents whether you like it or not...spouses on the other hand come and go...they are 'choices' not bound by the gene/blood connection...

I look at this situation through the filter of being both a husband and a father...and for some reason it clearly weighs much heavier in the father zone...

protection of your offspring and their well being....

thefool 03-21-2005 10:39 PM

I have worked with the developmentally disabled for more than 6 years. More than 50% of the individuals I've worked with have been or currently use feeding devices. A feeding tube is very different than LIFE SUPPORT. Someone on a respirator will die the minute you turn off their air flow, this girl is not on life support. She maintains life without aids, with the exception of a feeding tube. Its no different than after someone has had several cases of aspiration phemonia, if feeding them orally causes them to suffer (choking, gagging, food getting lodged, etc) then a dietician & dysphagia (swallowing disorders) specialist will rec a feeding tube or mashed/blended/liquid diet. You don't starve someone to death because they can't use a fork or spoon anymore... thats just insane. Sure her quality of life isn't what it used to be, but if you watched the videos on CNN every 45 seconds, you'd see that she clearly responds to her mothers voice, presence and she's smiling. She's very content & happy in those videos and does not appear to be someone who wants to die. The husband clearly has an agenda to getting rid of her. I do not support Bush 99% of the time, but in this instance, granted its not his place, but for once his super religious, high & mighty role came in useful. The government funds millions of disabled people, whats one more??

xuron 03-21-2005 10:49 PM

honestly...

I think most of the argument comes down to sociology and NLP/memetics (google it).

After understand these principles and watching the powerful push the weaker around, it really makes sense. When you watch the psychology of the masses being manipulated so easily but so carefully its almost genius.

Check out some stuff by noam chomsky (http://www.chomsky.info/)

He has a video about consent and how the media/powerfull create beliefs in us, kinda like raising veal.

For example... if everyone was forced to study history and understand WHY history happened and was made then how is it possible for history to repeat itself... like people not knowing they are responsible and obligated to make sure their government isn't corrupt or too powerful, taking away the peoples rights, etc...

every single thing bush does and the less protest/fight we put up just shows us how docile we are... more worried about making money (like me) then taking on the HUGE dragon that is running lose in our country now.

However, if you research memetics then you can see how easily something can become powerful overtime... religion is a perfect example... how did religion become so powerful way back in time, but now is somewhat less powerful? Look at religion as a business, look at *power* as a business...

honestly the more time I spend studying business, marketing, sales the more I see patterns in our everyday NON-business life... even with girls, sounds funny but its true...

ok I think I am done rambling... even though I got plenty more where that came from

xuron 03-21-2005 10:51 PM

one more cent...

also whoever wins is the more powerful, its just that simple. it doesn't matter whos right... its just the natural order of things... the more powerful dominate the weak (physically or mentally)

If Terri Schiavo were a black woman, would you be her champion?
