I can't believe that piece of crap search engine is worth even remotely close to that. They must have some killer investments in their portfolio or something that the general public don't know about hidden somewhere for someone to ante up that much.

Ah nevermind, I found what their principal assets actually are:

$2billion sounds pretty reasonable for all these internet properties.

IAC owns those properties not Askjeeves. IAC is Headed by media giant Barry Diller, he is one of the old hollywood guys who actually moved mountains within the entertainment industry.

Ticketmaster alone is worth billions.

Ask Jeeves doesn't own those assets, IAC (the company buying Ask Jeeves) owns those.

Oops, my mistake, you're right. Hmmmm, I can't figure out why they would drop $2billion on Ask Jeeves then, whats the catch? They have to own much more than just the search engine.

its a great deal for ASKJ
not bad for a company worth under $100 mil just 2 years ago
They definatly sold it AT THE TOP

not so good for IACI, with all the purchases Barry Diller has made
THey still havent figured out how to achieve all the synergies from their combined web properties.

In this deal, askjeves will always be the 5th best or dead LAST singificant search engine property on the web with no real hope of getting much bigger market share... Well unless TW people screw their own AOL property even more.
On the flip side there is no other SE worthy of an acquisition for a company like IACI, so this deal makes some sense. Askj wasnt cheap either, Barry paid a very large premium. Just for a comparison purposes thats about $500 mil more than Yahoo paid for their cashcow Overture about a year ago.

I'm not sure why anyone would use Ask Jeeves instead of Google to search for things.

Diller is a very smart guy, and for him to pay that much he is obviously planning something big. Remember IAC owns a bunch of web properties that can tie in nicely with askjeeves especially with 44 million visitors a month from IAC's current sites.

i didnt say he's not smart. He's definatly a very smart guy and understands the web. But you cant argue with the fact that he's a little late to the SEARCH party and is paying a very high premium for askj

His main property that will get a boost from this is citysearch.com, others might get a marginal boost

Just a few days ago I read an interview with him saying he wants in on the whole local search market. Ask Jeeves just started playing with it too, so I guess he saw a technology and brand he could match to his CitySearch.

Big sales online recently. Domain market has been hot, about.com sold, and now askjeeves. We're seeing consolidation in the mainstream market. These guys own expedia.com and many other big mainstream sites.
