Mobile Phone Porn Set for Sales Spike

AMSTERDAM - Mobile phone users around the world spent $400 million on pornographic pictures and video in 2004, an amount that is expected to rise to $5 billion by 2010, despite the tiny screen sizes, a survey found on Thursday.

The adult entertainment sector was one of the first media industries to take advantage of the World Wide Web, and its customers were the among the first to get high-speed Internet access for downloading X-rated films.

In mobile communications, however, pornography might not do as well as on the fixed-line Internet, because the screens are small and download prices charged by telecoms operators are high, research group Strategy Analytics said in a report.

"In 2010 we estimate that expenditure on mobile adult content will represent just 5 percent of total end-user spend on mobile content services," said analyst Nitesh Patel.

"We expect services that are built around sports, music and media to perform better, because they appeal to a wider audience of users," he added. In addition, there is value in offering news bulletins or a recently scored goal on a mobile screen.

Still, the $5 billion in porn revenues by 2010 is $4 billion more than Strategy Analytics had forecast until recently. It has upgraded its estimates, because adult entertainment businesses are aggressively building services, and customers are buying.

Playboy and rival Private Media Group have geared up their offerings, and many mobile phone makers are busy implementing strategies to make sure no subscribers aged under 18 years will be able to access x-rated services.

In addition, one in every two phones sold in 2005 had bright color screens, which will rise to four out of five by 2010.

In the meantime, anecdotal evidence from countries that have a technological edge shows interest from consumers. South Korea's SK Telecom said in late 2003 that 23 percent of the traffic over its higher speed mobile network was adult content.

What's ironic, is that websites before, felt that thumbnail previews wouldn't take away from their offering, because the image was too small to jerk off to, and that people would pay for membership to then see the full sized images.

The Mobile market and the article that KRL posted shows the contrary, that people are getting their satisfaction from small, tiny thumbnails.

So if someone is used to seeing and enjoying pics that small, they have a treasure-trove of websites to visit that show those thunbnails, and never needing to pay to see the larger versions.

The most common question that we hear on this forum is "....but guys, why would anyone want to watch porn on their cell?". I want to tell you why and also say that if you ignore this market then you are letting revenue, that should be yours, slip through your fingers.

There are two types of content on mobile 1) Personal and 2) Personalised.
It's important to distinguish between the two to help you understand WHY consumers buy adult content.

1) Personal is the stuff that consumers enjoy in private, the 2-3 min video clips for $7 (yes $7, mobile phone content economics are unlike the 'net) and images/animations for $3. This type of content will commoditize fast and prices will fall due to competition and a flood of content to the worldwide market over the next 12 to 18 months...but consumer appetite will grow and that means sales volume will increase and there will be lots of room for many adult publishers to profit, if they have the right strategy.

Our data suggests that the majority of paying Adult Mobile Multimedia Content consumers tend to be the executive 'Playstation' generation (25-35 male demographic) with modern large screen phones like the Nokia 6600, 3650, Sony P900, Motorola RazorPhone etc...so their experience is excellent with large bright colour screens, sound and video.

Please note that low bandwidth streaming video on many adult websites defaults to 2x2 or 3x3" screen! And if you try and blow that up you lose resolution....so low bandwidth users have had to live with this small screen sizes for years, and webmasters have profited from it so why should the same not be true of mobile?

2) Personalisation content will always attract a premium. This is the stuff that consumer want to use as wallpaper, screen savers, games and moantones. And of course is needs to be subtle - but many consumers would rather have Terra Patrick licking-her-lips in close up as a screen saver or a psuedo moan/ringtone playing when their girl calls (subtle is the key - is that a moan or a tone??) rather than a dancing frog with an annoying song! Personalization content is huge, is price inelastic and if you can produce exclusive content then you will always attract a premium.

And this is just the beginning. Mobile is different because - well it's mobile! That means adult webmasters can not only sell their content to wireless customers on the go but they can reach their consumers anytime with time sensitive, geotargeted messages and multimedia content that drives them to WAP sites or back to the Web for upsells. If I get a message on my cell prompting me to logon to live streaming right NOW at discount as my favourite star is on, and all I need do is send a $3 reverse charge SMS for a pin number, then I'm gonna send that SMS and find a PC or fire up my WAP browser pretty damn fast.

Monetize this people, and you will have yourself a brand new - and very disruptive - adult entertainment business model.

Without question, Mobile will seamlessly extend the adult experience from PC to mobile-mode. SMS, MMS, Infrared, Bluetooth, Streaming Mobile Video, Mobile Chat, Location Tracking and Mobile Blogging will all contribute to the ultimate 'nomadic' adult experience. If i'm wrong I'll eat my Nokia.

Mobile porn will become a commodity extremely fast. Free porn will be all over the place. People who consume mobile porn will probably do it for the sake of doing it, showing pics to friends, jerking off at a bus station public restrooms, etc. Free porn will be enough for them sooner or later. Geo-targeted Reality Amateur mobile porn seems like the only way to make money in the long-term mobile porn market (vids of a girl with the same zip code as yours, pics of a MILF from the city you grew up in, etc.). A concept like cams.com, where the talent gets paid based on the demand, will be a winner in the mobile porn arena.

Plus the fact that the screens on mobile devices are a lot more advanced then they were just a few years ago. My friend showed me his new palm pilot phone thingy last night (I know, really tech, right?) and it was like a whole PC monitor in the palm of his hand. I was amazed.

Of couse people will need content for mobile and not every provider will allow this. World Wide Content does, so keep us in mind.

I want to tell you why and also say that if you ignore this market then you are letting revenue, that should be yours, slip through your fingers. There are two types of content on mobile 1) Personal and 2) Personalised. It's important to distinguish between the two to help you understand WHY consumers buy adult content. 1) Personal is the stuff that consumers enjoy in private, the 2-3 min video clips for $7 (yes $7, mobile phone content economics are unlike the 'net) and images/animations for $3. This type of content will commoditize fast and prices will fall due to competition and a flood of content to the worldwide market over the next 12 to 18 months...but consumer appetite will grow and that means sales volume will increase and there will be lots of room for many adult publishers to profit, if they have the right strategy. Our data suggests that the majority of paying Adult Mobile Multimedia Content consumers tend to be the executive 'Playstation' generation (25-35 male demographic) with modern large screen phones like the Nokia 6600, 3650, Sony P900, Motorola RazorPhone etc...so their experience is excellent with large bright colour screens, sound and video. Please note that low bandwidth streaming video on many adult websites defaults to 2x2 or 3x3" screen! And if you try and blow that up you lose resolution....so low bandwidth users have had to live with this small screen sizes for years, and webmasters have profited from it so why should the same not be true of mobile? 2) Personalisation content will always attract a premium. This is the stuff that consumer want to use as wallpaper, screen savers, games and moantones. And of course is needs to be subtle - but many consumers would rather have Terra Patrick licking-her-lips in close up as a screen saver or a psuedo moan/ringtone playing when their girl calls (subtle is the key - is that a moan or a tone??) rather than a dancing frog with an annoying song! Personalization content is huge, is price inelastic and if you can produce exclusive content then you will always attract a premium. And this is just the beginning. Mobile is different because - well it's mobile! That means adult webmasters can not only sell their content to wireless customers on the go but they can reach their consumers anytime with time sensitive, geotargeted messages and multimedia content that drives them to WAP sites or back to the Web for upsells. If I get a message on my cell prompting me to logon to live streaming right NOW at discount as my favourite star is on, and all I need do is send a $3 reverse charge SMS for a pin number, then I'm gonna send that SMS and find a PC or fire up my WAP browser pretty damn fast. Monetize this people, and you will have yourself a brand new - and very disruptive - adult entertainment business model. Without question, Mobile will seamlessly extend the adult experience from PC to mobile-mode. SMS, MMS, Infrared, Bluetooth, Streaming Mobile Video, Mobile Chat, Location Tracking and Mobile Blogging will all contribute to the ultimate 'nomadic' adult experience.
