Gzip or Not?

Howdy, would it make sense to use gzip on your tgp? I have not really read alot about it yet, but it is supposed to save a lot of bandwidth, is this really the case?

Is it helpfull to do? Stable?

Anybody using it?

What exactly would you gzip on a TGP? Are people downloading something? Do you even know what gzip is?

It's a compression format. Somewhat like .zip only native to UNIX.

Not exactly, but neither do you I assume, because it is a way to zip your page, it then gets unzipped on each visit, which is supposed to make it UltraFast

I'll fill you in after my quest on info

It always makes sense to use gzip as long as your processor & diskio arent saturated.

It does virtually nothing to the images, but the pages (and thus your text ads) will load up to 80% faster.

All our tours use gzip.... so you tell me...

I did find some info right here, including an example: http://www.action-porn.com/ubb2/Forum1/HTML/000826.html

I'll go from there.

Actually I do know what gzip is. I also know that gzip and mod_gzip are NOT one in the same. Try Google for questions like this. It always helps to get AT LEAST some basic knowledge of the topic you are about to post a question about. Had you asked something like "What are some of the pros and cons of mod_gzip?" I would have known what you were talking about. I am a UNIX geek. You say gzip, I think .gz. gzip IS to UNIX what ZIP is to Windows. mod_gzip is NOT the same as gzip.

Got it?

You have got me interested in it though. I always knew what it did but never really jerked with it. I think I am going to install it on a server and do some benchmarking and see what happens. Dang, I would get SO much more work done if I would stay away from GFY.

From my experience, it does absolutely nothing for jpeg or gif's but does good on html and txt. If you have a site that is 90% html/txt then its worth it. If its anything less than 50% html/txt its not worth it. (by 50% i mean 50% of size).
Remember that mod_gzip uses CPU to compress so it can hurt your overall performance. if its all HTML/TXT though, you will end up using less resources just because each connection will end faster (And the surfer will load faster too if they are on a modem since they have to download less) In most cases for adult sites it's not worth it though....

A & H, we all have that problem
On TGPs with many table tags or text in the source, it might be very helpfull. I have (since my first post on this topic) heard through ICQ that it might be a load on the CPU when you have about 1.000.000 pageviews.

Axxx, Go Fuck Youself! and welcome to the board
