The SLK, not the SL, was the first mercedes to have the retractable top. The SL didn't receive a retractable top until the redesign in 2003. Up until 2002, it was soft top with a plastic rear window and an optional, big, clunky removable hardtop & the price was still in the 90k range. So for 40k you had a retractable top on the SLK; for 90k you had inconvenience for the SL.

any SL over any SLK anyday! Any hot chick that sees you rolling in an SLK KNOWS you're 5'7'' or shorter-LOL ..... I'm 6'2'' and I cant sit in an SLK with the top up. a short car for a short man. Honestly the car is for women, who definetely look hot driving them.

slk is faster for 30K less money..

I'd still go for the SL, if you're looking for speed neither car really fits the bill all that well.
