Need Urgent Windows Help

Help!

When i boot up one of my windows XP machines at home i get his error:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UMMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I tried:
1. restarting, nothing
2. I havent installed any new hardware
3. Starting in safe mode, still get same screen.

What are my other options?

Call the manufacturer. Dell, IBM, Gateway, Sony all have support.

Otherwise it is a rebuild? If you do a rebuild make sure to kill the master boot record. You could have something nasty.

If you have data to recover, you'll need to boot from floppies or a CD. You'd need to know what your doing. If you were that much of a geek, you wouldn't have asked here.

MAybe a job for the GeeK Squad - you can find them at Best Buy.

Good Luck! I know it makes for a shit day...

You can make those bootable floppies from the orginal CD. Using another computer to do that might be smart.

thanks pussylover

Whats most important here is getting the files to another computer and then formatting that hard drive and reinstalling the o.s

If you don't know what you are doing and the data is critical, stop, you can fuck things up worse. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Sounds like your MBT got fucked up. The data can be recovered.

What you can do is take the HD out and plug it in another machine as a slave drive ( Set jumper to slave ) Or you can use an external enclosure. Pull all your data off and then reinstall the HD as a master in the original machine and reinstall windows.

start from your xp cd
choose repair
then type help and look for the following commands
choose repair boot
choose create new boot
and startup again
that should solve it

This happened to me... the bootable drive mysteriously got changed in the BIOS. Double check your bios boot settings and see what HDD is set. If you don't have multiple HDDs, then your MBR might be fucked.
