need help with format c: :)

everytime I do this I fuck it up.

I want to erase my hard drive, leaving nothing but the bios, and install a clean copy of win98

so do I do format -s (slash s?, or slash something else), delete the partition, and create the partition and I'm ready to go?

do I do the partition before the format or after?

You don't really need to take out the partition, unless it's/they're fucked up or something.... or you wanna change 'em around.

To make a fresh partition, use FDisk....

format c: AFTER fdisking.

well if you want to delete the partition insert a boot disk, fdisk, then format c: /s

if there's nothing wrong with the partion insert boot disk format c: /s /q

(q is for quick formatting it's so much better)

make a boot disk first (a floppy)

then restart from a:

type fdisk and delete the partions

then format c: /s

you can't quick format after fdisking so no /q

If you are formatting your hard drive, why not install win2k? I can leave the computer on for weeks without the need to reboot. Win98 can never do that for me. Win2k is running smoothly on my PII350 (a bit slow) and PIII550 machine.

Marcus, don't forget to put your drivers
for your cd drive on the boot disk you make or have. No driver no cd drive = no windows install.

Also a boot disk is "NOT" a Start-up disk (that windows makes for you). Good luck.

Forgot after you make the boot disk (I'd make more than one) boot with it and make sure you can access your cd drive.

Some versions of dos will attempt to make backup files with just format c: and also perform unnecasery verification.

format c:/u will format drive unconditionally

If I am wrong I apologize and will shoot myself.

Okay.... so....

1. Make a '98 boot disk...
2. FDisk the drive.
3. format c:
4. Install Win2K Pro.
5. Convert FAT32 to NTFS.
6. Live happily ever after.

Bonus Steps:

7. Install shitty software.
8. Get a virus through Outlook Express.
9. Come back to GFY crying like a bitch.
10. Have yours truly tell you to format c:

Ok. let me set all records straight and turn this into most boooring thread ever posted on GFY

Waste, my comments were not aimed at you just the tread in general so we are not enemies ok.

Gaaaaaaaaaagh I fuken hate been seerius but heer goes

Reason why you should never fdisk your drive if you don't understand what your doing
Often drive manufacturers have a special format that compliments the drives hardware, deleting it and using fdisk or allowing bios to auto detect drive settings can leave you with an inefficient hard drive with slower transfer rates and often results in a loss of formatted storage space (use software drivers provided by the manufacturer whenever possible)

If your changing operating systems its not a good idea to format the drive from a floppy using the /s because all the dos tools like "format, fdisk, debug" are written to work with a particular version of the command interpreter (command.com) so if you boot up from the hard drive you will NOT be able to run any dos tools provided with your new OS. (that's "if" you can gain access to the cd rom)

Also call me anal if you like but it irritates the fuck out of me knowing that when windows installs itself onto a drive with a working boot sector it backs up all the unwanted shit and stores it in your windows directories.

A windows startup disk is about 10,000,000 times more useful than a "system disk/boot disk" as mentioned earlier a windows startup disk contains the universal oak cd rom drivers and has all the necessary tools to clean your drive and reinstall windows, it is not important that this disk has a different command.com to your new OS.
.
.
.
For the benefit of Markus

To completely remove your old operating system and install a new one without fucking up just follow these simple destructions.

You need a floppy disk and also your original windows cd you used to install windows.

Put the floppy disk in the floppy drive and put your cd rom in your cd rom drive (hold the shift key down to stop the windows cd from auto booting when you close the drive door)

Go to your control panel and select "Add/Remove Programs" click the "Startup Disk" tab and click "Create Disk"

Once the startup disk has been created reboot your computer with the floppy disk still in the drive.

It should now boot from the floppy disk and you should see a menu , select the boot option that includes the cd rom drivers. (if you don't boot from the floppy you need to go into bios and change the boot default to a,c)

You should now be at the dos prompt and if you must this is the time to run fdisk and remove your partitions.

Next type " format c:/u " NOT " format c:/s "

Once the disk format has finished put your new OS into the cd rom drive.

Now select your cd rom drive (note that it will now be one letter higher up ... drive E: is now F: because the floppy boot disc creates a ram drive)

Type setup hit enter and install your new OS.
.
.
Now I must go smoke some weed to fully remove any seriousness left in my system, I can't belive I just typed all that shit I read fuken books with less words

onlyreal yes format c:/ freaking u

If you want to see the difference put a floppy in drive a and type format a: and before it formats it does a check on the existing disk format.

Now type format a:/u and you will see the difference.

Read your dos manual.

This is my last post on the subject of /u its giving me premature rigamortis. (unless I have a chance of GFY tee shirt for most stupid thread)
