Sponsor Shaving

I want to give everyone the tool here we use to figure out if a move is profitable or not. If you use this sheet intelligently, you can surmise if someone can afford a given payout or not and end the debate about shaving as well.

This is a pretty complex sheet and I don't have alot of time to explain how to use it all so if you have any questions just post them in here so people can answer besides me as well.

Last comment is that, like anything, this isn't perfect and it's predictions are only as true as the truth of the data you put in so make sure you use real world numbers, not "pie in the sky" ideals. This sheet was created when I doing LUMYR and it's expanded with input from numerous people over the years.

I have numbers plugged in here just as place holders. They don't mean anything in specific although the conversion and retention numbers are reasonable for a decent sized startup. Plug your real world numbers in or some projected returns and you'll get the idea real fast what your paysite(s) will do... put in numbers for sponsor payouts and try to estimate conversion or retention from them and you'll see if it makes sense too...

CLICK HERE FOR THE SPREADSHEET - This is an Excel file.

I'm looking to shed some light on a very polar attitude I see in this business where people either believe everything they hear or they think everyone is lying. I does me no harm to share this info and if it makes some friends then so be it. If you think this business is about competition then you are taking much harder road then the guy/gal who goes by "he/she with the most friends wins." This is the highest turnover business in the world. You need your competitors to survive and they need you.

No, I sold the clientlist to my lead designer when I took the job with 110 Media Group. I only do that one job now.

Wouldn't LUMYR be not-so-happy that you're giving out info that they usually sell as part of the consulting package?

When mark was with us at duke dollars that spread sheet was pretty accurate and saved us a bunch of money on ideas that sounded good but when plugged in they didnt add up. Its a good tool.
Good post buddy

It's not LUMYR anymore, he took the client list for strictly design work. He can't offer consulting because that's not his skill set but he doers phenomenal design work. So it doesn't matter to him... I wouldn't do something to screw one of my oldest friends in this business!

mark,

excellent tool. thanks for sharing this.
it looks to be the same spreadsheet that was posted in a link a few days ago, or perhaps it was posted in another forum?
anyhow, the numbers were slightly different, based on 75k investment vs. the 50k in this one.

just curious what is the 2,000 server cost? is it outsourced hosting, or as it suggests -- buying your own server?

the response from hedonistic is typical to the type of non-productive replys seen all day long. anonymous useless slander.

and hedonistic, that avatar is absolutely repulsive...it makes me sick.

mark - great stuff. keep the valuable info coming. i always read your posts!

That sheet has been posted on another board for some time yes.

The $2000 is assuming you buy your own box to run your sites on.

THanks for the kind words. =]

oh ok, b/c you have been in this biz since '96, and you have 18k posts it gives you the right to say what you want without a response from someone with 100 posts? yeah, that makes perfect sense.

actually, after i posted i realized i may have responded a little quick. for that i apologize. i was merely pointing something out.

and yes i'm somewhat of a newb, here, but not to business in general, and that's what i was commenting on.

no ill will intended.

AGH! How many different ways and times do I have to say the numbers in there are just numbers, not any kind of real number you should go with? Put in your own #s. I had to explain that like 100 times the last time I shared this. =]

Good analysis. Many guys should do the same. The good thing about it is that I can take that sheet, change a few variables, and it makes total sense.

Exactly man... everyone has their own real world numbers to work with. I like using this thing just to evaluate individual ad campaigns too.
