Depends what state, and if you plan to live in the CBD or not?
I'll use Melbourne as an example. (all pricing in AUD) CBD, StKilda, Southbank, Chapel, etc those types of areas starting at $400k AUD and going up. If your living in the burbs then its going to be cheaper. I live 10mins from the beach 1 and 1/2hrs from the Melb CBD and I got a house for 250k. Food. If you cook for yourself then $100 roughly will be enough per week. Naturaly if you plan to eat out a lot then expect to pay that per night. Drinks at a club are roughly $6-7 for spirits per glass. Usualy gas/electric/water are billed 3 monthly so average about $100 per 3 months for gas/water and probably x3 for the electricity. Climate today is 25deg clecius, 31 tomorow and 31 Sun. Crime rate depends were you got ultimatly. If you move to a getho area then small crimes ie: Theft and stuff is expected, in the CBD's theres beggers and junkies you'll come across if you go in dodgy areas, and if you walk down a deserted dark alley at 3am then you'll probably be mugged common sence prevails. Gas prices, vary from place to place. Where I am today its $1.05 per liter and in the CBD it's $1.10 per litre. -N

firstly what type of lifestyle do you like so we can work out what area in Australia you might want to live?
do you like living in a big city? by the beach? country town? bush? cold climate? hot? in Queensland the gas prices vary from about 89cents/litre to 105cents/litre (unleaded fuel). Its more expensive in some other states.

3 bedroom appartment, semi-inner city, to buy - around 250-350k/usd (to buy brand new) - also note you cannot get cable internet at an appartment, its satelite TV and DSL only. - living expenses: comparable with any major US city. Internet is slower, but cheaper ($40 usd for 1.5mb dsl with 20 gig limit) , food is slightly more expensive than any major US city, stores close at 9am and our range of food is not as good as sparse. - climate in brisbane is great, very comparable to california. - crime rate: I've never been affected by a crime ever although it does exist. Comparible to Canada is my best gueiss. - Gas: works out about $2 per gallon. Other states have a fuel levy which brings their price up to $2.10+ per gallon. Where are you moving FROM?? |

climate:
Victoria - cold as fuck NSW - Getting Warmer QLD - Very fucking warm and humid higher u go. It's the end of the summer here right now, will be cold come June-July in our winter, then Summer is Dec on to late Feb/early March or so Sydney is most expensive to live, then probably Melbourne then Brisbane, that gos with house prices pretty much too I believe.

Melbourne - four seasons in one day!
This year there have been some pretty dramatic temperature swings, a few weeks ago it was something like 9C overnight and 34C half a day later. We also had that freak storm that dumped more than a month's worth of rain in 24h. My estate's lowered walking path turned into a small creek. |
