I'm not sharing the copied movie with 100 of my friends.

And even if I were to do so, Blockbuster doesn't directly lose cash each time one of my friends were to watch the copied movie (unlike how I'd lose money each time one of your friends logged in and downloaded my content).

You're comparing apples and oranges. Here's a better analogy:

You buy a membership to my site, stick around for a month, download all my content, and then watch it for months to come after your one month membership has expired. Would that be wrong?

It's a little different. You can't rent music. (Rhapsody and the new Napster can not be included in this conversation)

If he were trying to copy and sell or make multiple copies for his friends that would be bad. But if someone is legally renting a movie and copying it for his own collection the MPAA doesn't care as much as if he were one of the guys putting it into the Shareeza network.

Bingo. Not one single person has been prosecuted or sued for just downloading MP3s. Those who got caught were distributing the files.

There's no one that will suffer because he copied a movie from the video store. The video store made it's money by him renting it, and the production company made it's money selling the license to the video store. They both profited.

Plus, this isn't "art"... motion pictures are mass produced and marketed to make money. And the majority of movies comming out are terrible. You think the video store will give you your money back if you bring it back the next day and tell them you didn't get your money's worth? fat chance.

If you think that the movie companies make their money off of selling to blockbuster, you need to go back to the community college you came from. They make the majority of their profit from dvd sales. How do you think they can pay for those non "art" movies that you and your buddies sneak into.

At the library here you can pick out pretty much any cd and listen to it for free... well, the $10/year library card fee anyways.

I didn't say they make MOST of their money selling licensing to blockbuster, but yes... they do make money from it.

You're an idiot and I highly doubt you are involved in the adult industry, this board is for adult webmasters only. Please leave the board.

Do you have any idea how much a video store pays to license a video for rental purposes?

It's you who I wonder about being in the industry. This is a simple copyright violation. Do you know anything about copyright? Ya know, it's that thing that you pay a license fee for so you can rip your dvd's for your content.
Maybe you just "copy" those too.

If you have ever had any content shot for your site, you would understand that you have to pay for usage rights. Having been a photographer for 15 years, gives me the edge in experience with copyright here.

You my dear, are the idiot.

I didn't know that copying dvd's from blockbuster had anything to do with the adult industry. Maybe you should leave the board.

Christ, once again, you're comparing apples and oranges. You obviously know shit about copyright because you can't tell the difference between copying for PERSONAL USE and copying for COMMERCIAL USE.

Read up on copyright laws and fair use before commenting again.

I've bought over $60k worth of content licenses, thanks tips.

But seeing as you're a photographer... I'll explain it to you in terms that you'll understand; Do you think it's stealing if a surfer buys a porn site membership, and saves the photos on his hard drive to look at later? I'm not talking about distributing copies to all of his friends, or reselling them.

Saving the files to disk... would you have a problem with that?

I already presented him with that incredible analogy and he conveniently ignored it.

Not the same thing, but I see your point. But it's not really a good analogy as in this case you are making your own car - not making an *exact* copy of it (if that were possible)

if i had a magic car cloning machine and made an exact copy of the car, would it be wrong? :winkwink:

and actually, when i copy a dvd, it's not an exact copy. the quality is reduced by 40-50%.
