Is TGP2 Still Around?
Haven't heard anything about it for awhile. Was wondering.

The concept in general doesnt work well being that bookmarkers will move to regular TGPs were there are galleries with more content and less sponsor links.
But I don't doubt that there are sites using the TGP2 model that have done well. I am just implying about the general concept doesnt work as long as regular TGPs are being mass produced and are evolving to more and more free content.

I wish this model was more popular. I had a better conversion ratio with this model as opposed to standard tgp but the traffic was too little. I even tried making my own little tgp2 at the time but I'm far from a guru in the tgp biz so no big burst in traffic there...

I used to have one of the biggest tgp2's when the idea came out sad thing was that it was a 10k a day site or something there was never alot of traffic in tgp2 and by now i figure the idea has died.

TGP2 is by no means dead... TGP2ers just aren't as militant as they / we once were. The crap over the different "factions" is long over and gone and the "rules" are now accepted as standard. Can you make a living doing nothing but TGP2? At this time, doubtful, but the more people that do it increase that possibility. There are always going to be haters, and that is fine. Those of us that have had success with TGP2 will continue doing so. At a minimum, anyone that builds tgp galleries and / or freesites should spend an extra 15 minutes, make good tgp2 galleries - put the pics on html, load up the keywords and link the fuck out of your sponsor(s) and submit them to the gallery pool. You won't see an overnight blast of traffic from them, but you'll still be getting sales from them months, a year, even years from now. |

Do you have a domain you are not using, try the rotateher.com and get reviewed rotating tgp2 galleries. Pick your favourate niche, add the links and some hard links to toplists, link lists. Then build some galleries or take apart some of your old TGP galleries, (don't forget to put them on html, add more links and make them search engine friendly and put them into the tgp2gallerypool.com
Easy as pie. If you get a few people together you can make a group project with a hub.

Jimmer,
How big is TGP2 nowadays? How many people are involved in it and so forth?

Here's one of the first articles ever written about TGP2.
TGP2 A Revolution in the Making? (Aug 13, 2001) by Colin Delia There's a small movement gathering some momentum that most of you have suddenly heard about in the past week. There's a buzz. There's an excitement. There's something on every webmaster board about it. TGP2. Have you ever watched a movement start from the ground up, noticing every little nuance. It looks just like this. Chilling? For the past 6 (almost 7) years, I've seen many free site models come and go. There has been a rather consistent pattern with those new models. There is usually a brief period of opportunity, followed by a real boom, and then eventually a bust. Back in 1997, Top 50's and circle-jerk sites fed off each other, and contrary to almost everyone's expectations, a few of the top 50's were able to surpass Persian Kitty, at that time, entrenched at number one on every adult public counter service there was. Lots of people couldn't believe it when it happened, but there was a group of us circle-jerk site operators that had a very strong network .. and many of us saw it coming months before it did. Now some people were saying "don't do top 50's and cj sites because they will never last." Now, in a sense they were right, they won't/didn't last forever. The bust DID come. I don't think there are any top 50's in the top 100 on Sex Tracker anymore. And there are very few circle-jerks. Many of those circle-jerk sites evolved into what is called CJ2 (less popups, some stringent rules, etc) .. and both before and after that some evolved into TGPs. There's a post at the Adult Webmaster Info board by Shap, one of the most successful TGP owners out there. He runs picwarehouse.com, sexape.com and some others. This post was from back in June of 1999 and it details the exodus from cj's to tgp's. If you read carefully what he says, there is some excellent advice there that is still valid today. You'll also notice from reading his post that even though those big CJs were disappearing they were VERY USEFUL and became a different sort of money maker than they were originally, becoming the basis of some of the largest TGPs on the net. Now, back to what I was saying, when Top 50's came out, the people that first started them gathered all the traffic because everyone that wanted to try it had to trade with them (there was no on else to trade with). So sites like Cliffy's Top 50 and Adult Origin blew up fast. A bunch of imitators got a lot of traffic fast. Those of us running circle-jerk sites were starting with almost no traffic and would have sites with over 100,000 uniques per day in just two weeks. For a while, it was crazy, but eventually there was a bust (or was it a fadeout?). Too many people in it, competing free site models, or whatever. There were a lot of factors and none of these things is ever easy forever. Now, if you look at the top 100 list on Sex Tracker right now, you'll notice almost every single site is a TGP. That's where all the traffic is. Now those of you that run them or are gallery makers have also noticed that the traffic converts ridiulously low. If you're not using a free host, you have to be skilled to survive! On Z Thumbs I have 1000 really nice galleries with 20 thumbs each. 20,000 really nice free porn pics on one site. As you can imagine, sign-up ratios are pretty low. Now the TGP2 model is simple. Gallery makers can only give away 5 free pics. There are variations on this. Some say no hardcore. And there are some other rules people have come up with that are pretty good. We're hoping that giving these surfers less free porn leads to higher signup ratios. There have been some early reports that there are. These reports seem based on pretty limited data. So we'll have to see. I'm converting one of TGPs More Porn Pics to a TGP2. Click here for details and I'll report back here in about a week and let everyone know how it's going. Will outclick ratios drop? Will people stop bookmarking? Or will the faster loading pages actually be a benefit to the site traffic? I think the TGP 2 model is a little difficult to read. It doesn't contain a NEW WAY to trade traffic. Circle Jerks started out by allowing people to have blind links, then consoles, then right clicks. All new ways of getting traffic. Top 50s motivated other webmasters to send you as much traffic as possible. Robin' ABC console (anyone remember that?) was a top 50 without anyone leaving your site for good. TGPs gather lots of bookmarkers and then trade them out to other sites with lots of bookmarkers. Now CJ2 was a little like TGP2 is. It doesn't contain a new method of generating/obtaining it has gained some measure of success. Very recently, the TGP and CJ2 have almost blended together as many that operate CJ2s started using 50-60% content. One way that these new free site models work is by a group of people breaking off and forming a close trading group. All of the above free site models owe part of their success to these small groups breaking off and racking up some traffic before others jumped on. Then some groups trade primarily amongst themselves as the late-comers jump on and wonder why it's so difficult all of a sudden. TGP2 might end up the same way, thought it may be somewhat complicated. Small groups can form all they want, but large TGPs can instantly change their sites to TGP2 sites. Of course, if everyone changed, it would be pretty nice anyway. At any rate, A group of TGP2 webmasters is quickly forming and there is a certain comraderie it seems to me. A certain vigilante, throw up links to other TGP2 webmaster pages, start trading all over the place, only the devil may care attitude. A sense, a feeling, that maybe we are on the verge of something great. I hope we are!

Some more history. Here's another article from 2001.
WHAT IS TGP2? -by Colin Delia, Director TGP2 Bucks Since late July of this year, thousands of webmasters have heard of TGP2. Hundreds of them have become TGP2 webmasters and gallery makers. Many are still hearing about it for the first time and are wondering exactly what it is. Here's MY take. TGP2 began as a realization by a small group of webmasters that signup ratios from galleries listed on traditional TGPs were too low. The reason? Giving away too much free content. With 20-30 free pics per gallery, surfers were getting all the porn they needed for free at traditional TGPs. No need to buy a membership. No need to put money in OUR pocket. In late July of 2001, this group of webmasters created a new free site phenomena by defining TGP2. TGP2 was to be a new standard that would reduce this inundation of free content. In the process, a few more ideas were added to increase click-through rates to sponsors and sign-up ratios. A set of four standard rules was created for TGP2 gallery makers. # Between 1 and 5 clickable thumbs leading to the large image # Up to 15 non-clickable thumbs # No recips to regular TGP sites # No exit/enter consoles or autobookmarking A TGP2 gallery may never have more than 5 clickable thumbs. If there is any unbreakable rule within TGP2, it is this one. A gallery with any more than 5 clickable thumbs immediately becomes a traditional TGP gallery. I hold this rule to be the most sacred of sacred. THE definition of TGP2. The TGP2 gallery maker may also use up to 15 non-clickable thumbs. The reason behind this is to allow the TGP2 gallery maker to tease the surfer. The reason for this rule is also partly historical. TGP2 began as a post on the GFY board by a webmaster named "Andy". In that post, he stated that he would accept galleries with unlinked thumbs only. As the idea developed into permitting up to 5 clickable thumbs, the original non-linked thumbs were kept in the rules. TGP2 galleries should not link to traditional TGPs. To do so, would be to send the surfer to a free pic paradise and lose them forever. The last rule was created in order to maintain a standard of quality for TGP2 galleries. Curiously, no rules were created for the TGP2 owners themselves. This is probably because most of the founders of TGP2 were gallery makers and not TGP owners. The large majority of TGP2s do not trade with traditional TGPs. This is an unstated rule but largely upheld. There are only a handful of TGP2s that still maintain any trades with traditional TGPs. More than 90% of all TGP2s permit gallery makers to link their thumbs to HTML pages with the full-sized pics on them. A sponsor link above and below the pic is allowed. This is a great advantage for the TGP2 gallery maker, greatly increasing click-throughs to the sponsor. A good number of TGP2s will not list galleries with hardcore content. Another group of TGP2s will accept galleries that have hardcore thumbs only if they are of the non-clickable variety. In recent days, there has been a group of TGP2s that have announced they will list 5 thumb galleries only. Currently, this only represents about 15% of the total TGP2s. TGP2 is simple in concept. There is near universal agreement on a few of the tenets. There is healthy debate and vigorous testing on others. New ones may come. Old ones may go. Whatever may become of it, it is my hope that the TGP2 concept will teach all of us a lesson. When we give away thousands of free hardcore pics, we are also giving away our business. The surfer must be re-educated. One must pay for sizable amounts of member site content in order to receive it.

That says it all right there. That was the cap for a tgp2 site and very few ever even got that high. Most were 2 or 300 a day sites at best.

We have 15 sites taking submissions, I'm not sure how many pull from the gallery pool as I havn't been making galleries lately but someone may comment. Oh yes, did I tell you that a friend got a TGP2 gallery listed on The Hun's overflow and surfers bookmarked it?

You should ask him. I don't think you can piss his surfers off.
