What exactly is a "Ticket to Ride"

The Beatles are the greatest band ever. But what is a Ticket to Ride, some kind of British slang that I am too American or too young to know about?

Now you know why she was "riding so high"

LSD was often placed on paper (blotter acid) back then, so a "ticket to ride" often referred to a hit of blotter (aka an all day pass).

Man, am I THIS old?!

A "Ticket to Ride" is simply a way out, a break. It means you get to walk around acting like nothing matters, because, when the shit hits the fan, you're gone.

That's what it means to have a Ticket to Ride.

Come Together or Let It Be

After a little research I came up with these possible other meanings:

Quote:
According to A Hard Day's Write by Steve Turner, many Americans concluded the 'ticket' was from British Railways, and 'ride' was the town of 'Ryde' on the Isle of Wight. McCartney confessed to his biographer (Barry Miles) that they were partly right. Paul had a cousin who ran a bar in Ryde and he and John had visited them there. Paul later mentioned that although the song was primarily about a girl riding out of the life of the narrator, they were conscious of the potential for a double meaning.

Don Short, who traveled with the Beatles in the '60s, recalled that John coined the phrase "Ticket to Ride" for another meaning - The girls who worked the streets in Hamburg had to have a clean bill of health and the authorities would give them a card saying they were clean. Don later said that although he specifically recalls John telling him that, John could of been joking - you had to be careful with him like that. (thanks, Ant - Belleville, Canada, for above 2)
The truth is, John and Paul often used metaphors and double entendres in their lyrics, particularily during the period when they heavily delved into drugs, but couldn't say so outright.

The beauty of the Beatles music, and music/lyrics in general, is that each of us can find our own meanings in the music and lyrics - we can either come together (John) or let it be (Paul).

I think this is the most intelligent and insighful reply I have ever seen here.

Ticket To Ride

By Lennon, this song title has an interesting origin. First, it was sung during a skiing sequence in the film in Austria, which again, has nothing to do with the song. The origin of the title was that in Hamburg, Germany, prostitutes were required to have regular medical check-ups to insure that they were "okay." As a result, each girl, upon receiving this clean bill of health would be given a card to carry, attesting that they were medically fine. Lennon thought up the phase, "Ticket To Ride," to describe these girls and their respective 'cards." The song itself describes where a girl has taken a 'ride," out of his life. It was recorded on February 15, 1965.

Most of the times I have heard the Beatles discussing this sort of question in interviews (not other people who say they know) they claimed that most of the lyrics were random phrases without any particular meaning, and most of the ones that everybody thinks were drug related, were in fact not.

Who knows? I tell my kids to pay attention to Paul McCartney, as one day when the Beatles are as big as Bethoven or Bach they can tell their kids they saw a living Beatle.

Then I found out they didn't know who McCartney OR Bach was so I gave up.
