This might be entertaining!

I posted this on a niche webmaster board, and thought it would be entertaining to get the varied responses one finds in here as well:

"Since entering the design business not long ago, I've noticed a peculiar phenomenon. Simple jobs will go out to bid from all comers (usually on a busy webmaster board). All comers will then evaluate and bid the job. Usually, the person seeking to have the design work done will turn down bids that amount to working for more than minimum wage. Moreover, they will state that they are a designer themselves and therefore know the market. Their experience tells them that you are unrealistically overpriced and blah, blah, blah.

Hmmm....

The person seeking the design work is him/herself a designer? This has happened to me many times in the last month or so. Now I ask you, what the hell is up with that? Is the so-called designer not competent to do the design without outside help? Or is that person simply wasting the time of other designers in order to feel out prices? I was recently told that a header redesign and background redesign was a $50 job. Maybe in Bangladesh!

Let's say a given designer is worth more than $10 an hour. Now let's have that given designer put out a job for bid, and spend 2-3 hours of his/her time sifting bids and communicating with other designers. Then he has to work the design into his project. All of that to do a "simple" job that is only worth $50 to him? Why not do it himself?

Sorry folks, I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night. I suppose that after all is said and done, and the market researchers for outsourcing companies have finished telling the owners of outsourcing companies what to charge, there will be a blowback effect. Specifically, everyone will figure out that software does not constitute talent or creativity.

So, that's my deuce worth. Any other opinions?"

Let 'em fly boys!
