A non-adult site that I frequent, which receives massive amounts of traffic was shutting down because the owner is tired of maintaining it and paying the bills. It's a break-even operation that could be easily turned profitable...

I offered to take the whole thing off his hands for nothing and take over the headaches; after all, he was going to shut down the site completely anyway. His counter-offer was to let me manage the site while he keeps the domain.

It's a matter of get $$$ over a name that's not yours or have a name that somebody else is earning from. Either way, it's still a left and a right situation.

Yep, that's what he's offering. I don't want to turn the site profitable and then have it yanked out from under me by the guy that couldn't make it work.

I'll be better off building my own competing site.

I was offered a deal once to run a site for someone and split the profits but I just backed out after a month because I thought to myself "who's to say he won't yank it out from under me the second it turns a big profit"
