Buying domain for USD 280,000 ...

I know some people here have experience with buying or selling expensive domain names. I have purchased/sold many names, but in an area of 100-10,000 dollars. Which is the best way to do it? I mean, I do not want to send this guy the money and then he keeps the name,... and he probably will not transfer the name without money. I am in Europe and he is in North America. Is there something like locked bank accounts or something that the experienced domain merchants operate with?

thanx.

I've done about $250k in total through Escrow.com and never had a problem. They are pretty experienced in dealing with big domain transfers.

https://www.escrow.com/

Don't sweat the amount - it's no biggie for them - I've personally done numerous deals via escrow.com from hundreds to 6-figures with zero problems.

1. Ask the seller to establish a free account at escrow.com; you'll need their account name for opening the escrow.

2. Agree on terms - obviously you've done most of that already, but you'll need to determine who pays the escrow fee - you, seller, or split before-hand.

3. Open the transaction at escrow.com and follow the simple instructions.

As with any deal, make sure you have researched the seller, at least to some extent - hopefully you have/will talk *voice* on a real phone (*not* instant messager, netphone etc), research the domain (check archive.org, check past history, TM issues, etc), etc.

KRL's offer of help is definitely worth considering, since a law firm can often also perform a similar function - may be more cost effective ... compare and see what works best for your needs *and* that of the seller - escrow.com is well known, trusted, and fast - the seller could have their money Thursday, if the escrow is started and domain transferred today.

A domain is worth what the highest bidder so to speak is willing to pay for it.

Domain appraisals for are generally a waste unless there's an underlying business associated with the domain; appraising only a domain is basically a shot in the dark.

In regards to value of spend.com - doesn't appear to have ever been developed, it's not clear what it could be used for, and type-ins appears to be very minimal.

With that said, it comes back to what I started my reply with ... look at the offers you've received to date and then work the pricing from that ... feel free to contact me via email (see my sig) with more details about the domain, etc if you'd like.

Ron

One point here: Dana Wathen, who was the VP of escrow.com, resigned last Friday. She handled all my transactions--more than $1.5 million worth without a single problem. A real shame. She was fantastic.

My suggestion to you is to email or call Mickie Dances, who is now filling Dana's shoes for the moment.

If you need the contact, send me a note.
