Giving affiliates a heads up makes perfect sense. If you want to coordinate a massive marketing campaign, you'd want your marketers to know in advance that it's coming soon. This way, people can reg domain names, create sites, get listed in search engines, etc. You know once it's released, people steal images, so why release it before having a great marketing plan in place?

But as D-Money just said, alot of webmasters will be registering domains and preparing for this... It's tough to know who to trust in this industry these days, and I would hate to think all of their preperation was for nothing.
