"they closed 2 of my accounts at Golden Palace and sister site with about 4k in them total in 2000. I had other monies in other sister sites, but I was fortunate enough to wok out a withdrawal deal with them on those."

It was brought to my attention in Casinomeister's Forum on 17 February 2005, that downloads from Gambling Federation casinos included "malware". Malware is short for malicious software designed specifically to damage or disrupt a system, such as a virus or a Trojan horse. This is what happened when installing Gambling Federation software; during the installation period, a file in the Window's systems folder is modified. This file is located here: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

This "host" file will include websites that are blocked from your computer. If you locate this file and open it with notepad, it should be about 19 lines long and look like this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.

#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
When Gambling Federation software was installed, this file was modified on the users computer without the user's knowledge. It was expanded to about 5000 lines and three websites were included in the content:

255.255.255.255 www.theblackjacktable.com

255.255.255.255 www.casinoxo.com

255.255.255.255 www.royaldutchcasino.com

You would have needed to scroll down using the scrollbar on the right side to find these.

The sites listed in this modified file are not accessible by the user's browser; a "website not found" error message comes up instead.

One question comes to mind - why these three websites? Theblackjacktable.com is some non-descript gaming site belonging to casinosystems.com which is some no-name brand software (I believe) coming out of Costa Rica. Casinoxo is merely a directory sitting on a porno/casino server ULTSEARCH.COM. And Royal Dutch Casino? This is a Costa Rican based casino using Digital Diamond software.

A representative from Gambling Federation posted in our forum about the reasoning behind this:
First off, please allow us to extend our apologies for this major issue. We owe all of you an explanation regarding this.

A few months ago, we received several spam complaints from our players being sent by the domains you found in your host file. At first we tried to calm our players down, stating that we had nothing to do with these properties and were not responsible for their actions. However, the issue repeated itself several times within a short time span, causing us a mass influx of complaints.

We decided, albeit foolishly, to resolve this issue by blocking the domains which cause our players grief through the software. We did not intend to ever block any one else, nor impair revenues for affiliates. We now realize that this was not the right way to go about this problem. We will be issuing a fix for this very shortly and we will correct this problem within 24 hours.
The problem with this is that the reasoning seems half-baked. If players were complaining about spam, why not refer players to Spamcop or whomever. And a "mass influx of complaints" probably would have spilled over to some of the more popular message boards (where players love to complain), but not a peep. And blocking a website won't block spam.

Players' trust is fragile, and the discovery and acknowledgment of this malware is unprecedented in this industry. I really thought that Gambling Federation had known better. This doesn't make much sense to me. But then another statement was made:
Dear Members of the Forum

Gambling Federation would like to offer our response to issues raised in the Casinomeister forum entitled, ?Gambling Federation Malware.?

While our actions were not justified, readers of this message thread should know that Gambling Federation is a victim of an orchestrated attack to mislead our players. Over the past few months, we received numerous complaints from our players enquiring about unsolicited promotional e-mail delivered to a player?s e-mail address that was used only to communicate with Gambling Federation casinos. After reviewing the complaints from our players, it become apparent that one of our ex-employees was inappropriately and unethically stealing part of our player list, contacting our players and promoting non-Gambling Federation casinos.

We recognize that are actions were based on emotive judgment; we reacted to an unethical attack by applying the same philosophy with which our company was unfairly attacked. Regardless of our reasoning, we would like to extend our apologies to the investors and employees of Gambling Federation and in particular all our players and affiliates that have contributed to the success of our company over the years.

Gambling Federation continues to be committed to the free market and responsible business practices. We are also convinced that time will clearly demonstrate that we were in fact a victim in this matter. We will never use and have never used any tactics toward a legitimate and reputable competitor, like the vast majority of our competitors.

We want also like to thank our colleagues and associates that have communicated, publicly and privately, their support for Gambling Federation over the past few days.

Best Regards,
Talia Paschini
Gambling Federation PR Manager
Which was followed up by a prolific statement by "Greedygirl". I couldn't have put it into better words, so I'm placing it here.
This entire mess with Gambling Federation is reprehensible and there can never be any justification, whatsoever.

At the most fundamental level, Gambling Federation was responsible for the utmost care, security and trust of players and player information. The security, care and trust was violated INITIALLY when an employee was able to walk away with "secure" information (if indeed we are to believe this horrendous story).

*It should be pointed out that in this message from Flaviano, the level of theft is not elaborated upon. Was it only players email addresses or did it go deeper into personal information? This is an issue that cannot be ignored.

With the theft of this "secure" information, supposedly a "spam campaign" was launched by the former GFed employee, in an effort to lure GFed players away. When GFed realizes this occurrance, their actions were self-indulgent, retaliatory, and FURTHER detrimental to those players already suffering damage. It is beyond comprehension why Gambling Federation did not IMMEDIATELY contact its player base, warning of this breach in security. Rather than show concern for those who may have been harmed, GFed set forth to seek its childish and greed-motivated revenge by further damaging their player base in what can be described as a sinister, invasive, illegal and unethical manner. If this does not scream rogue, I don't really know what does, then.

What is even more disturbing about this is that upper management at best knew about the move to malware--at worst, this was done by upper management's edict. I honestly was hoping that this was not the case, as the implications of these actions are so incredibly devestating to this industry.

As Flaviano Fulga is a newly-appointed member to the Board of the Interactive Gaming Council (IGC), this action is particularly unsettling. The IGC is best known for it's lobbying efforts to advance the issues of online gambling, worldwide. With this in mind, the Gambling Federation debaucle is just the sort of thing that the US Government can have a field day with in its efforts to stop online gambling.

Quote:

3. Consumer Privacy and Data Protection: IGC members will design and operate their services to afford customers privacy and confidentiality and will post their confidentiality practices and procedures. Each IGC member will institute controls to detect and eliminate fraud and to protect data and the system from internal and external breaches.

I feel with this, it is incumbant upon the IGC to demand Flaviano and Gambling Federation step down from any involvement with this organization. Similarly, the IGGB should renounce GFed's involvement, there, as well. Further, I feel equally strongly that the industry must make a very loud stance against this sort of behaviour.

Casino Coins has done great by me - other programs do good too, but they're everywhere (like referback) - Casino Coins isn't overexposed which is why i like them :-)

I promote many different casino programs and consistently make the most $/unique with Prism's casino program They pay $75/ per depositing player ($100/this month) and have some great volume bonuses. What I look for is casinos that hand out high % signup bonuses to new players so its easy to attract first time depositers. Prism consistently has 200-300% deposit bonuses for players which makes it very easy to promote.
