These kind of threads make me laugh.
Obviously none of you have ever done software auditing for security vulnerabilities. IE is written badly and there will always be an endless stream of exploits to exploit the endless stream of vulnerabilities found. Nothing can stop this apart from a total re-write of IE which is what Microsoft has promised to do but is too late. It is not as easy to find security vulnerabilities for Mozilla Firefox compared to IE because it is written better and is continually being audited by the Mozilla community of programmers. I have two exploits on my hard-drive for IE that are "non-public", i.e. the person who found the vulnerabilities decided not to tell Microsoft or the security community, just trade it within blackhat hacker groups. It doesn't matter if you're totally 100% patched up according to Windows Update, these exploits will always work. This is one of the easiest ways to get into firewalled corporate networks, by e-mailing an employee or your target a link to your site that has the exploit to be infect his machine with a reverse-WWW-Tunnel-Backdoor. On the other hand I have none for Mozilla Firefox and have not come across any even though there are enough hackers/security auditers trying to find vulnerabilities for it. They are harder to find than IE make no mistake. Enough said by the probably one person in this thread to actually know what he is talking about. |

25 m and counting. firefox rules.

firefox rocks. 15% of my visitors use it. firefox rocks spread the word !
|
Firefox is the bomb!
|
eh, that's old news (yur slippin) and it's 25 million **downloads** - not users. How many people have downloaded it multiple times? Perhaps multiple times for each pc they own? How many have downloaded it after hearing the hype but didn't break free of IE (took forever to get my wife to switch more-or-less permanently)?
Not sure if I want all the retards using it anyhow. |
I'm using Opera and love it. But I've noticed a lot of people don't take into account that there are other browsers in the world besides IE. Ever try to check someone's page that was made just for IE? I hate tables.
FF is right. No matter what browser you're using, someone can exploit it. It's just a matter of time until it's not safe to be online at all on a PC. That's when crackers (ahem) will start cracking into Mac's OS. |

2 usefull pluggins: http://webdeveloper.mozdev.org/ http://www.quirk.co.za/searchstatus/ It's an opensourceproject driven by enthusiasts for free, why would it _need_ money? Yeah, money never hurts and I bet they get quite some donations. For example, for the 1.0release adcampain there was alot of donations. Certain companies are bundling it, read about some ISP just the other week that did just that. The firefoxcommunity welcomes that, it's good for their biz. |

Seems like IE7 will be more secure:
Internet Explorer 7 Announced It may be simply an idea whose time has come. It may be that Firefox is making enough noise to raise some eyebrows in Redmond. Either way, it looks like IE7 is on its way. Today at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco, Bill Gates announced plans for a new version of the world's most widely used Internet browser. Experimental versions of Internet Explorer 7 are expected to be ready for testing as early as this summer. The new and improved IE is apparently being developed with security being tops on the priority list. Measures to help users avoid ?Phishing' scams, spyware and viruses are expected to addressed in full as Gates pointed out that Microsoft has dedicated nearly $2 billion of it's annual research and development budget on security. While Internet Explorer still holds in excess of 90% of the browser market share, the new Firefox browser continues to gain popularity largely from veteran surfers seeking a higher level of security. Some statistics show Firefox with as much as 5% of the browser market. While 5% may be a far cry from IE's 90%, it represents one of the strongest showings from a non IE browser in the past 10 years or so. IE 7 To Address Security Issues Yesterday, Microsoft announced the upcoming update of their web browser, Internet Explorer, which will be updated to 7. Promising better security, IE 7 looks to address the number of vulnerabilities contained by older versions of the browser. The new version is expected to more effectively combat spyware, malware, and phishing attacks. According to Microsoft, "[Bill] Gates announced Internet Explorer 7.0, designed to add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility that customers have come to expect. Internet Explorer 7.0 will also provide even stronger defenses against phishing, malicious software and spyware." Expect IE 7 to arrive in beta testing format this summer." |
25 Million and one!

No shit I've downloaded FireFox I rarely use it. Mostly because it loads pages slower than molasses in January. |
Yeah, the 25 million downloads figure is suspect... Over the last 5 years I've probably downloaded various mozilla varients a few hundred times.

Haven't tried it. I've been a hardcore IE user since being online. I'm not tech savvy at all and it's difficult for me to change software/browsers I'm used to.
That said, I've never really had any problems with IE. I have my anti-virus and firewalls installed and have never had problems as a result of IE vulnerabilities. But competition is good and I hope FF or the others continue on to branch out. |

WHY should I switch to a browser that is SLOWER and more of pain in the ass for me to use? WHY? because it's the "cool" browser now? Or the browser of "rebels". Take the "fight the power" crap elsewhere. |
From a security perspective, the main problems with IE is activeX, the fact that IE is tied into the windows kernel, and thus that you can't ever remove it. From a web developer perspective, you have the non-standard html rendering problem. Ask the tech support in any large isp or corp what their number one problem is, they will tell you it is spyware - made possible by IE and your corporate overlords in redmond. All the IE lovers in this thread are just showing how technically illiterate they are, and that they are not fit to be administering their own systems.
