As a 22 year old black man
And as an avid rap fan...

I really find folly in your comments...

Jay-Z is the greatest rapper of all time
(as far as fans goes)

He has survived multiple era's and cycles of rap music and has stayed afloat thru it all...

Rap is a "borrowers culture"

Most of today's rap music is filled with samples from soul, jazz, and r&b songs from years ago...

Many rappers piggyback off of others lyrics all the time..
Jay-Z is one of the most borrowed rappers of all time also...

Meaning other rappers borrow ideas and wordplay from him...

For example...
In basketball there is the crossover dribble....
The great dunks that we see today
Were already done before....

I don't know what your crying about frankly there is a lot of business going behind the scenes...

Did you know Jay-Z wrote songs for other rappers..
this is called Ghostwriting....

It's a fact Jay-Z wrote Dr. Dre's lyrics on his last cd.....
It's a possibility Jay was writing for Big...

Ok...
Now just for fun...

Let's look at Jay-Z's career.....
Sold millions, made millions...
made more millions..
always owned part of his label....

See him in the streets no bodyguards...

Now is president of Def Jam...
Is Dating Beyonce the dream lady of even white men

Honorable Mentions:
Biggy R.I.P he was on Bad Boy just an artist

Tupac R.I.P was getting cheated for his money

Ja Rule enjoyed lots of success before getting career deaded by 50

50 Cent Is Rap's New Superstar needs 9 bodyguards just to go to the gas station, because he started his career off BEEF and DRAMA

Snoop has to whore himself for any and everything (you might see Snoop in a dog food commercial one day), plus got cheated for his money by Death Row just like Tupac

Nas, was broke first half of his rap career, just now starting to get back on his feet money wise....

Dre, owns aftermath is making a lot of money...
but got slapped by somebody Suge paid, and has to have restraining orders against Suge just so he can breathe comfortably...

Nobody else really stands out....

Jay-Z Won

"i say a big verse im only biggin up my brother"
^^^^- translation

"when i partake in saying a verse from the late christopher wallace i am only honoring his memory in my own special way and perpetuating his legacy so now you can broadcast this song with the two of us side by side"

Music is a business. It's that simple. And really, what rapper doesn't "borrow" from other songs, hell every time you turn on the radio and you hear a new rap tune the background is an 80s or 90s song. Snoops got a record out that when I first heard it, I thought it was an old one of his, I guess he used the old one to create the new one...

beemk 02-18-2005 04:17 PM

tons of rappers do this, its just them being influenced by other rappers. every rapper is influenced by someone. you have a compilation of like .001% of all the lyrics he ever wrote and you act like hes ripping off complete verses. not to mention hes using some of these lyrics on purpose and its not like hes trying to pull them off as his own.

Gabriel 02-18-2005 04:17 PM

Rap beats and lyrics in themself are very pastiche. Sampling and borrowing happen all the time. Its almost a sign of respect.

robfantasy 02-18-2005 05:56 PM

Dood are you fucking kidding? these rhymes are just respect for other artists.

Jay-Z and most all other great rappers dont write, they free style, and they use influences from stuff they like..

there is nothing wrong with that, you know how many rhymes Jay-Z has spit on. he is a nice MC.

he is just spitting off the mental..

this thread is really stupid and whoever wasted their time making that mix for hating purposes can eat a fat dick

ooops i must be biting humpty

eddie-executive 02-18-2005 09:52 PM

Jayz had 10 consecutive multi platinum albums since 1996 how many artists have done that?

you aint seen money in your life, when it comes to this cheese you like 3 blind mice
Jay-Z

MrJackMeHoff 02-18-2005 09:55 PM

Who cares, he sucks. All around he has no skills. Why would anyone think he wrote his shit? Most rappers rip beats and rhymes, not much different than this business.

galleryseek 02-18-2005 11:33 PM

"Music is a business". yeah, and that's no excuse to re-re-re-reproduce the same sound.

Being a musician myself, I can't stand those who rip off, borrow, steal (whatever you wanna call it) from other artists (whether it be in the form of lyrics or riffs)... a great artist, IMO, is one who is able to bring a significantly new taste to his/her genre - a sound marked with individuality, UNIQUENESS, CREATIVITY, and quality.

so saying "THAT'S WHAT MOST RAPPERS DO" is an excuse to explain a lack of musical talent and creativity.

maxdaname 02-19-2005 12:31 AM

He calls himself "the greatest of all time"... well, when you steal lines from legends, it isn't hard really...
Wow even took lines from Slicky Ricky...

For all those who haven't listened to Snoop, his ONLY good album is Doggystyle. He's a one album wonder, but what a good album it was.

I haven't listened to the Jay Z link posted. I'll have a listen to the link sometime today.

[Verse 1: 2Pac]
Now see so many motherfuckers wanna take a peice
Commin' equipped with some shit that niggas just cant believe
I pull a trick from my sleeve now kamikazee
I'm all over that nigga, come identify the body
My middle finger to you hoe niggas
Run up on me, and i'll be forced to let it go nigga
I aint the one you wanna try, why, stayin' high
I hit this blunt and watch these motherfuckers die
Whose runnin these streets I said that cocaine
Cause in the the dope game, niggas'll die 'fore they go broke mayne
Another hustler makin' major cash
'til the punk police come an raid ya ass
Now you stressed doin' fed time, and its a bitch
Cause the judge gave you 8 years, you doin 6
And we know that you can't hang, you a trick
Rolled over turned snitch like a biatchhhh

[Chorus (x1): 2Pac]
Now you know you shoulda ducked nigga
Gotchu fallin from the uppercut, fucked, so what's up? nigga!
Now you know you shoulda ducked nigga
Gotchu fallin' from this uppercut, stuck, so what's up? nigga!

[Verse 2: 2Pac]
They got a nigga in the dice game, I'm feelin' lucky
But the nigga just a little bigger, he tryin fuck me
Out my cash, imma blast nigga, he don't know
I gotta tell ya like the last nigga, gotta go
Don't need to roll for the truck, I get em' up
Left to right, my uppercut'll hit em' up (ha)
I'm known to walk the streets on any block
I love my niggas, but I aint puttin down my glock
The gun shots rang when I lose nigga, and ooh nigga
Imma show you not to ever play a true nigga (haha)
Lay it down just to prove it
And fuck the rappin motherfucker we can do this

[Chorus (x1): 2Pac]
Now you know you shoulda ducked nigga
Gotchu fallin from the uppercut, fucked, so what's up? nigga!
Now you know you shoulda ducked nigga
Gotchu fallin' from this uppercut, stuck, so what's up? nigga!

[Verse 3: Outlawz (EDI & Young Noble)]
They claim that we violent, we named after tyrants
This revolution won't be televised, we keep it silent (shh)
Roll on our enemies, beat em' at they own game
Molotov cocktails, release an up in flames
Tired of bein' stepped on, sick of bein' held back
Lookin' through my rear view, thinkin' bout the pay back
Wanna see my kids grow don't know if imma make it though
One more nigga came up short in the ghetto
Society lied to me so i'm strapped with the metal
Push ya middle finger up nigga if you a rebel
Have ya face down goin' in ya pockets if ya let em'
I done lost too many homies for me to ever forget em'
I done made so many mistakes but still I dont regret em'
I'm a product of the pimp, the pusher, and the reverend
I'm a product of the block, the fiends, and the felons
We all lost souls tryina find our way to heaven

[Chorus (x1): 2Pac]
Now you know you shoulda ducked nigga
Gotchu fallin from the uppercut, fucked, so what's up? nigga!
Now you know you shoulda ducked nigga
Gotchu fallin' from this uppercut, stuck, so what's up? nigga!

[Outro: Edi Talking]
To all the conrads no longer with us, see you when we get there
'Pac, Yak, we gon' keep on ridin', give these cowards the uppercut
'Til we get up there with ya'll, YOU KNOW!..
Thug Life we still livin it
Outlaw for life, in the name of the Don, let's go!
