Paysite Owners please answer..

I have a simple question for you.Do the majority of paysites use BSD or Redhate Linux 7.2 for operating systems.. I'm told that redhat linux is the way to go..

Can you give me any input on this please?

Thanks Steve

Redhat's easier to setup, and supports more hardware. FreeBSD is incredibly stable (on hardware it likes) and bloody fast. However, the new VM in more recent Linux kernels has evened things up in the speed department.

I still think FreeBSD still has the edge, though.

Snow... that is kind of a funny question....

It really depends upon what you need... BSD is probably the most stable OS you'll find, but speed wise i tend to find it's not quite as fast as the newest hottest linux kernel.

However... the other drawback of bsd systems is that they use ELF compilers, so some sw packages simply can't be installed... and others are a royal pain in the ass (e.g. mysql... hint.. use --with-low-memory no matter how much memory you have on freebsd)

Just MHO there... shit.. i still know of some big programs that are using NT systems though... so i don't think there is a "best" for everybody.

snow,
redhat is a real nice operating system as long as your admin knows how to tune it up, and make it nice and secure.
back in the day i could push 200 gigs of traffic a day on a 200mhz with 512mb ram running redhat linux
my admin was great.

snow,
pick an os that you can maintain easily as well...
like starting / stopping apache, commands like that. (easy stuff)
because, your admin will not always be around, and you don't want to pull your hair out because you don't know how to restart apache or some BS like that hehe..

umm. restarting apache is the same, no matter which OS you use.
/[path to apache]/bin/apachectl restart

Unless you are doing the admin shit yourself, your will never notice a difference. Only the tech geeks will compare linux distributions.

Its all linux. If your setting it up yourself, the easiest install I ever had was Suse, then redhat, then bsd.

How come OpenBSD did not even get mentionned?

It's been 4 years since a remote hole in the default install was found!

[Labret], you might want to give a Try to Mandrake 8+ it's a very cool desktop dist.

Last thing, what ever os you choose, have your admin install a FS with journaling, this is a must nowadays for HAS boxens.

Go with whatever your admin people are most comfortable with, the system they can get the most out of. They should be competent enough to make the right choice, and if they're not, then you chose the wrong people.

I'm sure everyone is going to hollar at me... But I very successfully use Windows 2000 Server. Great performance, great reliability.

security, reliability, speed -> BSD still kicks all the others' ass

we use FreeBSD on our complete server park and never made a better decision.

Well, if your admin wants to run RH then it's most likely bc he knows RH better than BSD. And thus can give you better service on a RH machine.

just a thought
