Lasik Surgery? Anybody recommend it?

Heard so many good things about it I was thinkin' of gettin' it.

There are several types I've learned and people rave about it. Heard it was almost 30 years old. Was worried about havin' some sawbones poke around my peepers with a lightsaber, but gettin' on in years y'know?

Well, my ex's girlfriend had it done and went blind in one eye (my ex dumped her because of it). My brother went to go see about doing it, the guy tore his cornea just in the exam and told my brother he wasn't a candidate. After about a year of healing he went to someone else who did the surgery and it turned out great.

I've done *A LOT* of research on this, as I plan on getting it myself. I'd have had it done already, if not for the fact that my pre-operative checkup showed that I had 'narrow angles' (a condition that could lead to glaucoma) which I needed to have fixed. Ironically, it was done by laser surgery.

First off, there has never been an eye 'lost' to lasik surgery, so "My buddy lost an eye" boy there is just pissing up a rope. The one single incident involving permanent loss of all vision to the eye was a result of some schmoe doctor using a HOME MADE(!!) lasik device.

However, there are real risks involved with lasik, including complications that could lead to requiring a corneal implant. Risks include infection, overall degrading of visual acuity, light sensitivity, 'dry eye', and so forth. However, the incidence of these risks are generally quite low (well under 1%) and are directly related to the experience of the doctor operating the lasik machine. This is why it's absolutely essential that you find the most experienced eye surgeon around to perform your procedure.

I've known dozens of people personally who've had lasik done, and without exception they've all loved it. One even went so far as to say "dude, it's like DVD quality eyes!" (he was young, obviously ) Only one person I know had any complications (infection) that cleared up and didn't require a second procedure.

Do your homework, know what to expect and what not to expect (ie. don't expect better-than-human vision when you're done, DO expect some post-operative vision issues until healing is done and your body re-adjusts) and you'll likely be fine. I have a few more months to go before they consider the effects of preventative surgery as being 'stabilized' and I can get tested again... I can't wait.

never heard anything bad about it, my man has been considering it for years now (was waiting to see if there was any long-term side effects from people that have had it done years ago).

seems to be that alot of people have tried it & loved it.

I'd get it, but from what I understand everyone expierences slight loss of night vision.

That and I saw a show on TV recently where patients came out with 20/20 vision, but it was double vision. And since they were technically 20/20, the clinics were able to claim success on them.

Slight my ass. Before surgery I could sneak up on your ass in the dark and gank you like a ninja. Now I run into doors when my house is dark and check out headlights when making car purchases. But its well worth it anyway.

BTW, if you have those Xenon headlights or whatever they are called in BMW's, caddys, nissan, hell almost everythign now.

I was talking to my Ophthalmologist last week about it and we both agreed it was not a good idea for me anyways as I work so much with computers.

If you have your eyes fixed at 20-20 you are going to find that once you get to be 30 or so you are going to start having problems with your near vision, and that you would end up needing glasses to to work.

I'm sticking with the contacts.

I had it done and am glad I did it.

I was extremely nearsighted, couldn't see anything without thick glasses. Now I don't wear glasses or contacts (although frankly I could probably use some glasses when I drive to see street signs a little better)

It only takes like five minutes per eye. It's simply amazing.

When you need glasses anyway (bifocals) you will have the surgery so you only need reading glasses ?

you dont get shots they put drops in your eyes to numb them

then after about an hour they take you in and lay out down on a table.

they then put these clamps in your eyes (think clockwork orange) then they take a very very sharp knive and peal back your cornea but your eyes are numb so you just feel some preasure.

Then they say something like "look at the red light, when it turns green thats the laser. so you count down and it turns green and after about 10 pulses that eye is done.

repeat on other eye.

Oh and I had an astigmatism as well.. They can work with that just fine..it just costs a little more.

as soon as you sit up from the table you can see.

I do recomend wearing polerized sunglasses during the day though (will make a big big difference) and carry eye drops on you.

having to use sun glasses and eye drops are a big big compromize for having to wear ugly glasses.

Man, glad I came here to ask around about Lasik. There's such a cross section of people you can literally see there's something to it.

I too waited to see if there were any catalogued side effects. I'm 3 days older than cracks in asses so I ain't worried no more.

I did find this website link that is SUPERB for info on what to look for when getting the procedure done. I am so amazed at how fast it takes.

http://tobeinformed.com/Lasik.htm

Some of you mentioned that as soon as you get the procedure you can see? Or does it take several hours or days to straighten out?

I know now around 5 ppl who have done it. 3 happy, 1 almost blind on one eye, and one a lotof trouble with his eyes since then.

All done in GOOD hospitals.

I have thought about it as well. But I just wait a few more years, untill the problems are all filtered out

I had it done 2 1/2 years ago, and I'm at 20-15 vision now. Definitely recommend it if it's suitable for your eyes (ie, you have to meet certain criteria.)
Make sure you know your doctors credentials, I thought it best to pay more for a guy that was the director of the center I choose and helped to test the most recent lasers for FDA approval, then to shop around for price.

kbut, that's what one of the articles I posted said. Check those credentials and check the techniques.

I wonder what the ratio of success and fuck up Lasik has?

It looks like it's far, far lower in favor than most other in-out procedures.

the results are as soon as you sit up but it still does take a few weeks to heal.

I am getting it done in Colombia in 3 weeks. My brother in law had it done 16 years ago...and he's fine...my husband's grandmother, mom, aunt, and uncles have all been operated by the same doctor...and all see well.

I decided to have it done there...but now I am getting so scared....can't see anything far...
