Dude Shoots Up Mall, 2 Wounded...Hometown area...
What gets me is NY State is one of the toughest states where an honest citizen can apply for a pistol permit, yet this guy goes berserk in a mall crowded with women and children. This sick shit has got to stop... I did some growin' up in this area of the country and it's beyond the imagination how dumb shit like this takes place.
----- Tuesday, February 15, 2005 Alleged shooter had Columbine 'fascination' Ulster mall spree suspect's home yields downloads By Michael Valkys Poughkeepsie Journal This Hesse Model 47 assault-type rifle was used by the mall gunman, police say. The man accused of shooting up the Hudson Valley Mall Sunday may have had an obsession with the deadly shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado. Ulster County District Attorney Donald Williams said Monday search warrants executed at the Glasco home of accused gunman Robert Bonelli Jr. turned up memorabilia from Columbine. The 1999 incident is the worst school shooting in United States history, leaving 15 people dead, including the two gunmen. ''It's very troubling, very disturbing as to his state of mind,'' Williams said of Bonelli, 25, who is being held without bail. ''It may paint a vivid picture of a person who had a lurid fascination with Columbine.'' 2 were injured Two people were injured in Sunday's shooting. Police identified them Monday as 20-year-old National Guard recruiter Thomas Haire of Pine Plains and Kingston resident Stephen Silk, 56. Haire remains hospitalized at Albany Medical Center with a serious leg wound. Silk was treated and released from a hospital after receiving less serious wounds. Williams refused to specify what investigators found at the home Bonelli shared with his father. Authorities also searched the car Bonelli drove to the Lake Katrine mall, Williams said. Williams said authorities found documents about Columbine downloaded from the Internet and materials ''with very specific details about the two shooters.'' Williams said Bonelli has spoken with investigators. ''He was interviewed and responded to questions,'' Williams said. Despite an apparent interest in the deadly Columbine shootings, the suspect did not appear to have intended to kill anyone during Sunday's shooting spree, Williams said. Williams said Bonelli fired 50 to 60 rounds from an assault weapon, but witnesses have said he did not appear to be aiming at anyone in particular. ''At this point, it would demonstrate it was not his conscious objective to kill,'' Williams said. He said authorities are also reviewing security videotape from Sunday's incident that may shed more light on exactly what transpired. Williams said no motive for the shooting has been determined. ''We may never be able to do that,'' Williams said. Those who knew Bonelli said Monday he seemed like a nice guy. Glasco resident Charles Barrett, who said he is a friend of the family, described Bonelli as a kind man who kept to himself, but didn't show signs of malice. Barrett said Bonelli favored heavy rock music and was often seen hanging out in front of his house. ''He was always very nice to me,'' Barrett said. ''I don't have a bad word about him. I just can't fathom this, even after hearing about it.'' The arrest report obtained by the Poughkeepsie Journal listed Bonelli as a 5-foot, 5-inch, 260-pound man. It said he has the word ''Cheri'' tatooed on his arm. The report did not list an occupation and Williams said he believed Bonelli was unemployed. Bonelli was arrested after he ran out of ammunition and was tackled by two employees from Dick's Sporting Goods. Several charges lodged Bonelli has been charged with first-and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. If convicted, he could face 25 years in prison for the most serious charge, first-degree assault. Bonelli is due back in Ulster town court at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities said Haire was on duty in a recruiting booth inside the mall when he was shot and that the 20-year-old might lose his leg. Albany Medical Center and National Guard officials said Monday his family asked that no information on his condition be released. Williams said the recruiter was apparently trying to aid others in the mall when he was shot. ''While others were fleeing, he was coming to render assistance,'' Williams said. New York National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Fanning said Haire has been in the service for less than a year. ''He is getting great care and his family is with him,'' Fanning said. Haire's family could not be reached. Two other people had bullet holes in their pant legs. Williams said the weapon Bonelli allegedly used was a Hesse Model 47 assault-type rifle. Williams said investigators are looking into tips the weapon may have been purchased from a gun show in the Town of Ulster not far from the mall, but he could not confirm when or if the gun was purchased there. Many still stunned Those who were at the mall Sunday said they are still trying to get over the terrifying incident. Town of Poughkeepsie resident Traci Micucci and her 2-year-old son, Christopher, stopped in a candle shop near Target in the mall when the shooting started. Micucci was shopping with a girlfriend when her son said he wanted a candle on display in the store. They were in the store when gunfire erupted. ''[The girlfriend] said 'Get back in, someone's shooting,' '' Micucci said. ''Then I heard this guy say, 'Take cover.' We hid behind the counter.'' Micucci said she clutched her son as the bullets were flying outside. ''We were crying and I was just holding onto him for dear life,'' Micucci said. Micucci said she usually shops at the Poughkeepsie Galleria and just happened to decide to meet her friend at the Ulster County mall. She was still feeling the effects of the experience Monday. ''I didn't sleep at all last night,'' Micucci said. ''I'm still in shock.'' She said there won't be shopping trips to the Hudson Valley Mall any time soon. ''I won't be going over there for a long time,'' Micucci said. ''Thank God we got out all right.'' Williams said the crowded conditions at the mall could have led to more injuries than the two men who were wounded, and a more tragic outcome. ''It's just incredibly fortunate,'' Williams said. |

Shows ya' how bullshit the homeland security crap is.
Just ONE guy with an assault rifle that he probably bought mail order or at some nutcase gun show. Had he been a terrorist he woulda wiped out hundreds in a matter of a few minutes. He showed how sappy our defenses are. Could you imagine the horror of had he opened up on the babies and toddlers???? It woulda been historic. Makes ya wonder when one day some nut will actually go for it at a mall or park. Better be on yer toes boys. |
