				 | www.rustycooley.com www.angelo.com These guys can out shred Yngwie Malmsteen, although Yngwie is the best composer to hit the neoclassical shred genre. Speed isn't everything.

				 | Yngwie plays with "feeling". It's just not a sad, bluesy feeling. He feels frenzied, rushed, excited. Like the feeling you get when you drive your car at 135 mph on I-95 at 4am. I feel Yngwie when he plays. Different people feel different things.

				 | If you don't think soul is something that can be mastered, then you don't play guitar. It's just another trick, just as sweep picking or a vibrato.

I used to take bass lessons from Billy Sheehan back in the early 90's when I lived in LA. Back then I was a TOTAL tech freak and wanted to play as fast and as technical as I could. Then... this big burly black man moved into the apartment on top of mine. His nick name was "Cat Daddy" (no joke) and he had toured with James Brown for a few years and a few other 70's funk bands. He taught me about groove and opened my eyes to funk. Real groove and real funk... and that was the end of my shredding days. Those hours spent in his apartment taught me more than any lesson or school I ever attended. But don't think I don't know about Racer X, Cacophony, Dream Theater or the countless other bands that have incredible players. | |

Two people listen to a guitar player and one thinks he is great playing with "soul", the other thinks he sounds lame and is bored. Does he play with "soul" or not? Does "soul" exist without an observer? If so, why do different people disagree on who plays with it? In religion, soul is a myth used to explain the the ultimate cause of our actions and what differentiates us. What separates us from the animals. In music, soul is a myth used to explain the way music makes us feel and what differentates musicians. What separates some players from others.

				 | Alright people! Listen up! The trick to soul lies in making a face that makes people think that you know what youre doing, when in all reality you're just sporting a decent vibrato over the basic American blues scale. That's soul. I'm just glad that others people judgement about my guitar playing doesn't lie in the faces or gestures I make. It's all in the writing and actual guitar playing that is taking place.

www.spasticink.com This is his solo stuff. Most people know him from Watchtower. Look at the credits for any progressive metal band (fates warning, Dream theater, etc.) and you'll see watchtower listed. He's out there for sure, but IMO one of the best as far as technical abilities go. All around my favorite guitar player is Alex Lifeson. Nice mix of technical ability, and emotion.

				 | A quick excerpt from his site. It offers some insight into his writing. The guy's whacked for sure. One of my favorite writing tools is 12 tone. Why do I use this often when writing? Simply because there is no tonal center. Notes and chords sound as if they're coming out of nowhere, but somehow fall into place. You can create any combination of notes, and come up with all sorts of wild chords, scales, patterns, etc... So what is a 12 tone? Well, my version differs from the "official" retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion where once you hit a note, it can't be played again until the other 11 notes have been played. What I do is simply use all of the 12 tones evenly. I do come up with a "row" of 12 tones, but rather than play the notes consecutively, I group them in sets and create chords, or clusters. On "I've Got The Runs" I wanted to come up with a 12 tone "progression" with 4 chords, 3 notes per chord (or cluster), and get the 4 basic triad sounds - major, minor, diminished and augmented/whole tone. Then I wanted to modulate this progression up/down several times thus creating a cycle. Here's the chords/clusters that I came up with:
