Do routers go bad

I've had one of my routers for a little over 5 years, and my connection seems to be kinda shitty at times. Sometimes I'll get disconnected from the net for 5 or 10 minutes, and I had my ISPs monitor my connection and get a report on it every 10 minutes and they said at no point did it ever go down, but it clearly was down on my end. It happens with both my DSL and Cable connection, is it possible that the one router is just old and its causing the problems, or could it be something else?

I think that they didn't go down, because it happens all the time. I've been awake for less than an hour and it's already happenedj twice. Once where AIm and ICQ lost the connection too. Plus it happenes with two different ISPs.

Routers need upgrades and yes at times go bad. The best thing to do is update the firmware in your router and clean it up ... that usually fixes 90% of the problems.

I'm guessing you have a linksys ?

Yeah, its a Linksys.

I am on a Mac, so I dunno if the spyware/virus thing is as much as a probability as the router thing. But I think I should prolly look into that too.

if you are on a Mac, disregard that then. If it is a linksys, thats the prob. I have a linksys and it works great, but a friend of mine has one, and the connection goes on and off, just like yours do. Its the router.

We have had to replace numerous linksys routers for the same reason. Connection running great for a period of time, then goes crappy.

Update the firmware and buy a can of air to blow the router out. Clean all your connections and blow the inside of your computer out especially all the fans.

I'm guessing you'll notice an improvement.

Depending on if you smoke near your computer and what type of dusty enviroment you have this should be done anywhere from every month to every 3 months.

I've gone through 3 linksys routers in the past year and a half. I bought a D-Link last time and it's been great. I've only had it for about four months.. we'll see..

I have had two routers that just one port has gone bad. Try using another port for your pc.
