Any Cobalt Raq4 Users?

I have just set up a new Raq4 server. But I can't figure out how to set up my email.

I need "baby step" help here. ie: detailed instructions.

For example, how would I set up a mailserver for the domain adultporn.com?

What would the A and MX listings look like? Do I need to set up a virtual site for a mail server? What other steps are involved?

Thanks for any help you can throw my way.

My Raq is hosted with Tera-Byte, so I use their DNS control panel to handle the MX & A records. But to set up the site, all you need to do is login to your server control panel, click add site, and fill in the form.

1.) IP Address: The IP address for the site.
2.) Host name: www
3.) Domain name: adultporn.com
4.) Web server alias: adultporn.com
5.) Mail server alias: adultporn.com

Then check the boxes to enable whatever features you need, like Frontpage extensions, CGI scripts, PHP, SSI, etc.

Jack, thanks for the info. The other 3, why do you always feel that you need to make a comment, when your comments have absolutely no point whatsoever.

Some of us are serious webmasters here, that simply want clear intelligent responses. I love nothing better then to receive an email saying I have a response, and then to get here and find that it's mindless drival.

Thanks for wasting my time and and the time of others who look at this post because they might want to learn something.

Well if they learn NOT to use a RAQ server then it hasn't been a pointless thread after all.

Look dick head mine was a serious post. If you are a serious webmaster you will not use a RAQ. They CANNOT handle any type of traffic. I bought one on the bitches when I first started and wasted 1,500. I am just trying to save someone from wasting thier money. Learn from my mistake. And they are EASY EASY to hack. Bottom line can you tell me any webmaster doing 100k aday wity a RAQ? Proabably not!

Mine was a serious post as well. You simply are not intelligent enough to take two or three words and realize that there may be something to them beyond entertainment.

Raqs are being dumped off by hosts right now at bargain basement prices because they are so extremely fucking prone to being hacked, over, and over, and over again. I almost bought some. Fortunately for me, the guy I was hosted with was honest enough to give me the story and advise against it. He has spent countless hours switching them out and getting rid of them.

Don't take my word for it, go read a fucking spec sheet. Get some inside input from some knowledgeable hosting tech people.

And the next time you see a comment that looks like "Raq = Hackers Playground".... think about what it may mean. I could care less if you buy a Raq... that's your decision and ultimately your problem. I'm just trying to give to a clue here.

Humbolt,
Any suggestions you can throw my way regarding email. Still having problems...

As far as the other "suggestions", please find anywhere in my post where I am asking for opinions. When you interject with your remarks in my posts and the posts of others, you take the post in a completely different direction and the original purpose is lost.
Simple fact is, I own a Raq4 and I need help setting it up. End of story.

Do me a favor, if you see a post with my name attached to it, don't even open it. I don't want your suggestions, and I truly do find you juvenile and absolutely not worthy of any sort of respect. I've read your other posts throughout the board and I certainly don't value your opinions. Please don't volunteer them!

Dew why be so agressive all these guys are saying is they wouldn't risk running their business on a RAQ. I agree, my raq was ok when I had it but there is no way i would put my paysite on a raq, its just a question of how important your business is to you.

But getting email sorted is very easy, are you wanting to forward mail to a mail account or set up a pop3? I am sure I can help its not at all difficult, the whole idea of raq's is to keep it simple.

The reason for the aggression is that members such as Amputate Your Head insist on making a comment on absolutely everything. So, those of us that are looking for real answers never get them. By the time other members get to the post, there is so much crap thrown in that the original question is lost.

I run a serious business and don't have time for comments like "ick...". With this caliber of comments, I would be checking for id...the intelligence level spells "underage" webmasters to me. Of course, now they will come back and say that they are 30 or 40 or 50, which just makes it worse.

I personally avoid any posts that have the tag line Amputate Your Head attached to them. I know that these posts will not provide any information on the real business of being an adult webmaster. And I don't think it's to much to ask for him and others like him to avoid my posts as well.

Thanks for the offer for help! I found my answer on a competitive board, which thank god, hasn't been spoiled.

Here's a little education for you dewdrop. I've helped more people with real problems than you've collectively met in your entire life. There are several, who I have no doubt, will gladly step up to the plate and confirm that for you if need be.

I find your lack of self-restraint... dry, at best. You've purchased a server. Woohoo. But you don't know how to configure email? Sorry.... I find that worthy of a comment such as the ones posted in this thread. RAQ servers are shit. I realize it's an after-the-fact statement, but nevertheless, most appropriate. What are you going to do when you have a REAL problem? I suggest to do some intensive reading before you do. Because you've basically gone out and bought a new Jaguar without knowing how to drive, and you're now expecting a two minute crash course as you're pulling onto the freeway.

Don't like my comments? Maybe they're a little close to home?

Dewpoint I can see where you are coming from -- but remember this board is for everyone -- I've always had a fascination with Cobalt products -- mostly beause I don't have the patience to fuck around with Linux ;)

I'm glad that Amp and others posted their opinions about the Raq -- I will know to avoid them in the future. This is very valuable info that should be shared...

I would like to know if it's just the Raq's that are easily hacked -- or if it's all Cobalt products? Anyway it seems like there must be a patch to make these Raq's hack proof... unless there is no way to upgrade the software on them.

You can go to cobalts web site and see security patch after security patch. They are still 100% easy to hack.

dewpoint grow up. I garantee you are not running a heavy CGI or large adult site on a coblat. I am a very serious player. I have done this for over 2 years and have also helped countless people solve thier problems. Go to AWI and ask. I just started posting here so as they say: GO FUCK YOURSELF

"Grow Up"...I find this an ironic statement when I can travel anywhere on this board and find such high-brow answers as "my balls itch" and "gofuckyourself". Yep, definately the sort of comments you hear in board rooms everywhere where serious businessmen meet.

The simple fact remains - 18 posts to this thread - 2 that address the original question. If you want to start a Raq4 bashing thread .. start one.. this wasn't it.

Plus, nowhere in my post does it say what the use will be, and yet you all jump over with your comments "it can't do this and it can't do that". I run a conventional marketing department and so the Raq is not for adult use.

On that note, Amp, I check this BBS once a day. From the number of posts you make, I can't see that you could ever leave your keyboard. So the chance of you helping more people then I have collectively met in my life is pretty slim indeed. As mentioned above, I am in a high profile position, meeting real people in the real world...

I have based my opinion on you from the comments you have made on other threads. I don't respect you and I don't respect your opinion.

And as far as the Raq being an inferior machine, I did my research. For all the "negatives" you report, I could point you to an opposing positive. It's the old Mac vs PC debate. Each one swears by their system. Could they both be right...depends on the use.

Okay Dewey. Or should I say Mr. Bigshot?

Believe me, the lack of respect is equally reciprocated. Now go get your "High Profile" Email-For-Dummies manual and figure out how to use your new state of the art Raq.

He's probably hangin' out at the fucking Menza Club.... crying in his warm milk about how we're all so abrasive and undignified.

Was you running any CGI scripts? I was using S2 and a banner rotator at the time and my load average was REALLY out of control. The Cobalts are great servers for non adult use or for static html but for cgi stuff it is out of the question.

I love my RAQ, though admittedly for non-Adult and not very high traffic sites. Still, every single page I offer up is PHP and MySQL driven, and never a single problem.

Most of the security updates are upgrading *nix tools that run on any *nix server, and would have to be done on any *nix server to protect it - upgrading/patching BIND, Sendmail, etc.

There is nothing inherently hackable on the RAQ's, in fact it is easier to keep them updated versus other servers. They've gained a "hackable" image because so many newbies, utterly clueless about security, manage and operate them. Give a newbie who's never heard the word "grep" before root control of a RedHat server and they're gonna get hacked.

I colo and manage a Raq for one of my hosting clients and I've found that there is all kinds of useful information in their knowledgebase at http://www.cobalt.com

The manuals that come with it leave much to be desired and I found myself referring to the site quite a bit for weird problems.

If you want help configuring your mail records or DNS server give me a call and I'll go through my raq configuration to pull out info for ya.

Sincerely,

So that I don't get flamed... I do want to point out that all my SinEmpire sites are hosted on robust Dell Poweredge servers...!! lol

However, I also feel like pointing out that however improbable it might seem there are plenty of anonymous adult webmasters out there making great money while hosting on a Cobalt... yes, they might not run much CGI. But, I feel it's worth pointing out that the Cobalt that I colo for this client we got used and the previous ownr was a friend of mine that was making 25k per month with his paysites!! LOL

This guy ran a T-1 into his apartment and all he used was this Cobalt for hosting. Damn, talk about profit margin. ;-)
