:stoned Cumming Up With Porn Clichés

Clichés are words or phrases that become part of our everyday language simply by being used again and again. Those of us who use words professionally try to avoid using clichés, in an attempt to convey thoughts in a new and fresh way rather than in the same tired manner. But sometimes a cliché can be a good thing.

Clichés get a bad rap because they become overused, but the positive side of this overuse is that just about everyone is familiar with them as they become part of our regular language.

A recent article on CNN is a good example. The author used the term ?blonde bombshell? to describe Jenna Jameson, and I don?t think anyone who read those words wondered whether Jameson was in danger of exploding. That?s a cliché that has been around since before Marilyn Monroe, and everyone knows that it refers to a smokin? hot blonde.

Avoiding Clichés Like the Plague

Sometimes it can be hard to escape the use of clichés. How do you say what has already been said, but in a different, original, more perfect way?

Anyone who has ever written text for an adult site or tour, movie descriptions or erotica stories, or anything else that requires a basic sexual description, has to face the challenge of finding new ways to describe the same old sexual scenarios.

While erotica stories are full of milky-white breasts, pebble-like nipples, love canals, quivering members, magic wands, shafts of manhood, and numerous other clichés and colorful euphemisms, porn sites have their own litany of clichés to pick from. There are plenty of cock-gobbling sluts, barely legal teens, wild college girls, busty brunettes, sexy redheads and big-boobed blondes to go around. There are hard cocks, giant cocks, monster cocks, shaved pussies and hairy pussies, and while these may be appropriate descriptions, the descriptions themselves have become cliché. It gets harder and harder to come up with original descriptions that don?t sound like worn out clichés.

Even a misspelling can result in a cliché. The words ?Cum inside? or ?Cum on in? have been widely adopted by porn site writers, capitalizing on a much-used cliché to appeal to the reader. Perhaps appealing to the semi-literate porn surfer, the letters XXX have even become cliché

The more smut and porn you consume (or just look at for work purposes), the harder it can become to avoid those overused descriptives. Especially for someone trying to write tour or site text or movie descriptions. It?s easiest to write what we know, and when we?re inundated with these clichéd twists of phrases on site after site; it takes a bit of thought to break out of the mold and try to come up with something original and interesting.

It?s not that there?s anything really wrong with using clichés. After all, they became clichés because so many people use them, and they do work. If you?re looking for quick and easy, clichés are the way to go.

Clichés work because words and images are hooked into our libidos through socialization. All of us have been conditioned to think a certain thing is sexy, and that?s what works for us. In the same way that we each have a preference for a certain type/style/niche of porn because somewhere along the way our brains learned to associate that particular thing with sexiness, we associate certain words with sex and they become triggers for arousal when we read them.

Everyone is different, but our cultures do a pretty good job of shaping our sensibilities so that there?s enough similarity across the board to make generalities and make some pretty good coin cashing in on these patterns.

Clichés Are Never New

Ideas and images can be cliché too. And, in this industry, there?s no shortage of clichés to go around.

Most of the adult movies that have been and are being and will most likely continue to be shot are based on a very tired cliché indeed. The typical porn movie is a cliché in itself that can easily be summed up with other clichés.

As my friend Lisa so aptly put it, ?all the guys have a third leg, the women have the proportions of Barbie, women get all hot and horny from just giving a blowjob...and once they do that you can fuck them like a hammer and it's all, 'Oooo...aaahh...yeah baby!'"
