iPod headphones problem?

Does anyone here find with the standard iPod (the older ones) headphones that they get a bad sound when there is bass and the volume is at 4/6th+ ?

It's really rather annoying on most hip-hop songs.

Does buying new headphones solve this problem?

Anyone-
Great, thx.

Yes, that. I hate it!

What to do? Doesn't apple sell "premium" headphones?

Get some good ear phones. The apple ones aren't that great. I got some Soney Nike ones, they aren't bad. They were about $50

Thanks for the recommendation. I am not sure I like the big earphones with the black foamy though.

Me too.

I got an i-Pod mini about a month ago, and the ear-buds are almost unlistenable now. Anyone experiencing this distortion should realize that this means the tiny speaker in the ear-bud is blown -- most likely for receiving too much low-frequency energy and being driven beyond the excursion limits of the driver. You must replace them.

For anyone wanting to explore the state-of-the-art in ear buds, these made by Shure are INCREDIBLE.

Damn you must be a real audiophile if you have those.. I personally like my $100 big clunky Technic headphones, the iPod ones are quite poor quality... never played my songs well it has next to no bass, which sucks ass when listening to some heavy metal

For something that costs $300+ i'd expect to be given some decent earphones.

$500?! Jeesus that's a lot. I never know buds could cost more than $100.

I know it sounds crazy to pay more for the headphones than for the device, but these are like nothing I ever heard. When I first listened to them, I kept touching my ears to make sure they were really in there, and the sound I was hearing was coming out of them. It sounded like I had a vast, music-filled airspace surrounding my head. Like I said, incredible.

And, you should not be surprised at all to discover that the earbuds that come with most devices (even expensive, supposed "quality" players like the iPod) are total shit. Manufacturers generally allocate less than 1% of the production cost of such devices to the headphones -- they are regarded as "disposable" "...and not a significant contributor to the perceived sound quality of the (player)..." -- LUDICROUS!

ear bud headphones suck no matter what they cost..
i just hate the feeling of something in my ear like that...

what I use:

Sennheiser - HD580

they ain't the newest (2002 model), or most expensive(~$199 or so now).. and I've had them long before I got the iPod... but they rock nonetheless..

Not at all, they look fantastic and if I had $500 to blow on a pair of earphones... that I know i'd break almost instantly I certainly would. However, I don't believe an iPod does such earphones justice, you'd need an excellent piece of equipment to really bring out the best in them.

Agreed. The problem with portable music is the portability. Designers have to make concessions to sound quality for size and convenience. I think we're all prepared to accept that the maximum sound quality level for a portable device/experience is below the maximum level we can achieve in a living room. But, still, I like to bring as much of my living room on the road as I can. Once you're talking about MP3 players, it's the file format (and codecs)that really determine how good the music is going to sound -- no matter the downstream amplification and speakers. In this regard, an i-Pod is as good as any other digital player. Only by experimenting on the output side can you discover the maximum musicality of the device, even if it means the "speakers" have a greater capacity for musicality than the player.
