Cable or DSL?

I have only used cable but I am considering switching...Which do you prefer and why? Thanks!

I used to have Verizon DSL, but since they decided to put me on an overloaded circuit I would experience 25-50% packet loss during peak hours. Now I have cable internet now, and 99.9999999% uptime (network goes down once in a blue moon for a short period).

Guess it depends where you live in relation to DSL service, how good/reliable the company is, what platform they are using, etc.

If your current cable internet works great, don't switch.

I have both. 1 cable and 3 DSL lines and I team them together for one robust internet hookup. It's easy with this switch http://www.edimax.com/html/english/products/BR-6524.htm

The 2 port one is fine for most users. I have the 4.

Then if your cable company has downtime you never notice and the same goes for DSL

My cable sometimes drops its signal, so I was debating on changing to DSL.

Not necessarily true. The closer your home ( or wherever you are using the DSL connection) is to the Hub the faster the service is.

I have used both and my DSL connection kills Cable.

Sounds like you tried to use DSL without the Freq. Blocks. Here in Mexico, DSL is the choice as most cable companies haven't a clue as to how to run a cable operation. Loads of down time, especially during rainy periods. That never happens with DSL.

Putting the frequency blockers on the used phone lines keeps the two separate. I'm on DSL and the phone at the same time, many times, and no problems or interaction between phone and DSL signals.

If you can get a 3 meg DSL line (costs me about $75 a month here) cable can't even come close.

dsl

i've used both. my dsl 3.0 from earthlink is faster in both upload and download than cable. i also had adelphia cable here in l.a. which would go down every day for an hour or so. i'd call their national call center (can't call them locally) and they would say. "everything's fine". i'd go outside to walk my dog and see 5 adelphia trucks up on the pole outside my place fixing shit (happened all the time).

i also went from paying $55.00 month for cable to $37.00 month for dsl.

to each his own.

p.s. i used to be a HUGE cable proponent, but i'm convinced it's a local thing, whatever works for you.

Cable = Speed differs with bandwith, It can be a little faster or a lot slower than DSL, Static IP

DSL = One solid fast speed, Multiple IP's

I say DSL

Misty Kristy 'n me have used both for a long time, and really prefer DSL, we just seem to get faster speeds from it.. and we're not even very close to the hub. Better connectivity as well compared to our local cable company.

i've got both at my place for redundancy, but the dsl is far better for working/games...

the cable is just all over the place sometimes.... at least the dsl is consistent... and the speeds are fairly the same

cable, charter
dsl, sbc

We've had both and from our experience cable has always been way faster and more reliable. Cable was easier to set-up and easier to trouble-shoot when problems did occur. I'd say stick with cable.

Cable is faster of you dont have a ton of people on your block that sit glued to the tv, or play on the computer in the cable modem. It is a shared signal.

DSL belongs to you.

I'm currently on DSL, and my provider have bandwidth capped at 4GB upload and download per month.
Called the company and asked them to cut my internet for Saturday, and I have a cable guy coming to put in cable. Hopefully it'll be better

I pay $109 for a 3-meg cable connection WITH every channel including the premium channels, so that's a pretty good deal, it makes it a bit cheaper than $75

If your cable modem drops it signal often, then perhaps you should give them a call. Sometimes your levels get a little off and that can make your signal drop. All that it takes is someone coming over and they can tweak it for you. Every now and then I have to have someone come over and adjust mine.

Time Warner is good on the east coast though.. Which raises the point that you'd certainly be best off asking your local computer geeks ;)

Our Time Warner keeps offering me Cable, Cable Internet and unlimited Cable telephone service for about $140 a month. Right now I pay $100 for cable, About $60 for Verizon DSL/Phone. Not saving all that much to switch and my DSL is pretty darn good.

Decissions Decissions....
