call-kelly auction

Less than 2 hours left, and the bidding has just moved from 90K to 90,200. Given that the webmaster claims that the site makes 15K per month "easily" and that an experienced webmaster could crank that up to 30k per month, those bids are awfully low. If call-kelly were a mainstream stable business, with profits of 15-20K per month while requiring only a few hours of work per day, the business would be worth at least 400K. It will be interesting to see what the final bid actually is.

Regardless at this point the reserve price has not been met so the owner(s) of call-kelly doesn't have to sell it unless they want to.

You've got a damn good point there. Fuck, if it makes $15K per month and the server costs $2K per month, that'd leave $13K extra. Hell, you could generously pay someone $4K per month to run the site and make $9K profit.

I guess that it all depends on what they need the money for. If they need a lump sum of cash right now for something, then I could understand that, but the smartest thing to do for the long run would be to let someone else run it for them.

anyone who'd pay 90k for that site probably *still* owns it.

One reason for selling would be if you thought the site's profit was going to be significantly less in the future than it is now. But there can be lots of other reasons.

But -- if the figure of 15K per month "easy" is accurate, you could invest 400K, pay someone 30K to run it, have another 30K per year in bandwidth and other expenses, and still get 120K return on your investment -- which is 30%!! In the real world, that would be considered fantastic.

So -- to the extent that the final bid is less than 400K, the discount has to be attributable to some combination of:
1. Maybe the figure of 15K per month "easy" is bogus. I have no idea of its true or not.
2. Porn is socially stigmatized, which makes porn businesses worth less than comparable "socially acceptable" businesses.
3. Pessimism regarding future earnings. If a business is growing, and investors think it will earn more in the future, then it is worth a lot more than a business with an equivalent balance sheet that investors think will make less in the future.

actually .. internet businesses are valued at 6 month revenues ... if it's making 15k per month, it's worth about 90,000 :-)
