I am planning to open a FREE HOST with a friend of mine. We are planning to go bannerless for sometime then add some ads as everyone does.

I would like to know if there is any income in that??? Cause if there is then how come everyone doesnt open free hosts? <- Real Question, not sarcastic....

To those that have free hosts just one more question: How long do you have to wait to make your first dollar of profit??

you dont need alot to run a freehost a good 10mbit line can get you started pretty good.

just make sure you have a good server that is reliable.

Hey Za Ha,

For someone that has this outlook on the industry, I'd say going into freehosting now is the opposite direction you would be wanting to go.

Free hosting is tough. There are many advantages to running them, but it requires work, connections, cash, and a lot of planning. If you think TGPs sucked balls, then free hosting will really take you for a trip.

That's my thoughts...

I have my own free host for a couple of months http://www.hostones.com and don't think I will make much money with it. I only did it because I have more bandwith available then I needed. Currently it only takes me about 25 Gb a day, so I don't care much about that.

Za Ha don't do it!!! I thought because I can convert any traffic, why not open a freehost and see if I can make more money. Well it didn't work that way. Within three weeks of opening we were at 1.5 million hits and were bringing in about 20 bucks per day. that is definately not going to pay the BW bill....lol. 1st month of BW was 8k....I thought we had a good deal on BW at $225.00/mbit. We eventually had to stop the bleeding so we added redirects and all the other bullshit associated with freehosts in an attempt to get banned from the tgps. It worked because we are now at about 130k...We are now in the process of incorporating our own paysites in the headers and footers as well as the 404 as well as remove all the redirects. If that doesn't work, the freehost is coming down. My advice to you, is to be careful because that is an area of this industry that can bleed you dry. If you want more information feel free to icq me at #74296267 and I'll fill you in. One other thing, don't let anyone that owns a freehost tell you they don't redirect or filter foreign traffic or any of the other gimmicks that are associated with the running of freehosts because it just isn't so. You need to think where is the majority of your traffic coming from. It is coming from all the tgps and what is associated with tgp's? Surfers looking for free content. It is my belief that they are desensitized to the freehosts and their ads. Who the hell knows. I thought just because I send 700-1000 joins per day to various sponsors, this would be a breeze. Try out using a hosting company that provides you with a reseller option..
Have both free & pay options available to your visitors..You'll get a cut of the pay hosting option..lets say hosting co sells to you $1.00 per MB & then you sell 1mb to your visitor for $2.00..you just made a buck!!
This space you just sold isnt taken out of your space, the hosting co will provide this customer with their own space & bill them separately, you just acted as a reseller..Get what Im saying...
As far as making $$ with freehosting, the catch is whats in your headers & footers & if they're gonna convert..Lets say you get 100 members & 1/2 of them get great traffic, you may make a decent buck if these sites visitors click on your banners etc.
There are some places that'll let you set up your own freehosting for free & you can add your own header & footers etc..But I havent found any for xxx.. http://www.megagiga.com
Seems like quite a few people on this board most of time have nothing to say but negative..
Good luck....If your headers are small & I get unlimited BW & disk space & you offer 100% reliability & uptime, I'll sign up...I'm tired of moving my sites around..

It's simple, to stay alive you've got to be huge (better BW & hardware prices). And even then, you break even. The only reason I see for starting a freehost is to save on bandwidth for your other projects, or marketing purposes. But forget about it, you won't become rich if that's your only source of income. With a bit of luck you'll be able to eat

You've got to know how to administer a server. You've got to find all the damn cheaters too (that are uploading warez in 70k JPEG files chunks) and stuff like that. It's a real pain in the ass trust me. Not to mention all the copyright infringers, sick people that upload CP,... It's a real nice job to police 20-40gb of jpeg files every week!

I don't know... I am using SexPlanets for the last few years (as a sub-host, at euro.sexplanets.com - sorry about the beautiful design) and get very good traffic from it. I am feeding through it 12 AC Gold sites, 3 pay-sites and two affiliate programs. For all the bad things you may say - hey, at least they are up for more than 4 years so you don't need to change URLs every 3 days...

Just do it if you got enough money. You could get everything running with deep enough pockets. Get that $30,000 1000MBit line form cogent to your building (would be another initial $100k or so before they even bother) then have a designer making you new frontends for your premium avs sites each and every day (which you put into footer and headers instead of paysites) and a kick ass admin to secure your 32 server linux cluster. That's all, you're set and should break even after a year or so.

The bulk majority of freehosts haven't made money on the traffic in adult in a long time now. If you don't have some non adult projects to funnel traffic to, why bother with it?

Za Ha, I thought about doing the same thing but after seeing the numbers and talking to several freehost people and others who knew alot about it. Its a really hard racket to be successful at without taking a beating finanically let alone time consuming and a pain in your side.

Sexplanets offers a good solution too bad they dont let you use your own domain name.

With sexplanets you CAN use your own domain - you get a subdomain instantly then you setup your domain.

Rivux: perhaps the terms weren't clear enough for you - it doesn't say you can't submit to search engines it says you cant SPAM the engines (the keyword there is 'bulk') meaning you can't build a million doorway pages and try to get them all listed coz that will just get you banned.

I have no idea what 'fucknards' means but I'll take it as an insult and send it right back to you..
