They won't need to undercut the business. They're the most trusted name in the internet nowadays and everyone who's clueless will turn to them. They could charge $45 a year like ICANN used to do and still get thousands of followers.

Just because they are now ICANN accredited it doesn't mean they are getting in the domain business. They might just own 40,000 domains and want to lower their overhead. They are very aware of the value of domain traffic to search engines. That said, they may very well be planning on getting into the registration busines. I'm just saying, we don't know for sure.

Google has no plans to sell domains
Actually, the Register reported that a Google spokeswoman told them that it has no plans to sell any domains at the moment. According to the article, the reason it paid a $2,500 application fee and $6,500 to cover six top-level domains is that it "wants to get a better understanding of the domain name system [and so] increase the quality of our search results". The article goes on to note that "...Amazon did exactly the same thing nearly two years ago. At that time, a March 2003 article in the Wall Street Journal pointed out that the online giant had become a registrar and assumed that it was about to launch a domain name selling business. It set the industry off - but we are still waiting, 47 months later."
