who here runs a forum?

Specifically for mainstream sites, what means of traffic do you use to get new members to join and participate?

We have one. We have a little online company so we added boards to create "stickiness" (marketing term meaning...keep them coming back).

I would suggest seeding the board. Bascially that means loading up different nicknames, starting a bunch of threads and you talk to yourself a good deal. Make a couple topics that has two points of view, one of you takes one point of view, the second takes the opposite side. It is things like this that really get people starting to post.

As people join, your "characters" drop off one by one so no one really notices too much. Many of the large mainstream companies seed their boards prior to opening and they usually keep on one or two "seeders" to insure a constant influx of ideas/subjects etc. Campbells Soup, Turner Movies etc. were all seeded.

No one wants to join an "empty" board, no one likes to be the first to post. Most like to lurk a bit, read some thing etc. before joining, so you have to give them that stuff. Once you get a few members, it is the members who end up getting others to join and pretty soon you are all over the net. It does not usually take long at all.

If you need help with seeding or just more indepth information on how you can do it yourself contact Core Adult (in my sig). They are very good about giving out advice.

I launched one niche mainstream board and a more general/gaming board about 3 weeks ago. I got sidetracked on a bunch of other projects (actually a good thing) so its a slower start than I planned.

I have several non adult forums.

they are targeted to specific hobbys and geographical locations. The members came via word of mouth primarily.

We have one on a modeling site which brings in only 1500 hits a day and two mainstream sites have forums but traffic is not very good maybe an extra 400 hits per day. Not a great source of traffic at least for us.

I did for a while - Nothing like the adult boards but we ran in more like an adult board and it did pretty well until the mainstream company shut it down because there was too many racy threads.

I've got a few mainstream forums. One in particular that was doing very well untill my fuckwit of a hosting company managed to 'lose' all my databases and so went all my members and their posts. It was all word of mouth but it grew to like 150 in about 2 weeks and they had posted like 2K of posts in that same time frame. The board in question is back up but I don't have the time to maintain it and promote it.

If anyones interested Im selling it. It's www.grungeforum.com anybody interested icq me at the address above. Also selling the domains skaforum.com and alternativemusicforums.com

Lux

That's why we offer board posting services for both webmaster and surfer forums. We charge only 12 cents a post.

Roles played are outlined at http://justtraffic.blogspot.com

How do you go about actually getting them to the board? (what type of traffic)

It's against the rules here to post a link to other forums, so I'll just post a link to my main site there - Entertainment Edition.
