I saw it on Headline News today, supposed to happen just before dawn. The Earth is passing through the tail of a comet like it does this time every year. But this year is supposed to be one of the best. |

A bunch of the people I was with in Vegas are headed out to the desert to watch it. They said 3:00am. I tried to extend my trip so I could go with them but the only flight available Sunday was 6:45am. Fuck that.

We drove out to Lake Hollywood, right under the Hollywood sign.
We thought we'd be alone.  Luckily, a bunch of teenagers were there drinking, and yelling  . Some were even playing bad music. But that's ok, because there were about 4 other people playing slightly better music. Too bad it sounded just like it sounds, 5 different types of music (all loud), people speeding up and down the street, and older people yelling at the teenagers to "turn off that racket!!"  . The teenagers said, "sorry" (in their own way  ) and turned it down.The drunk or stoned young ones, (mostly wearing their college outfits), would cheer when we saw a meteor, and begin clapping.  Sure some would spill their beer, but they had friends to remind them that were spilling their beer, "DUDE!! YOU'RE SPILLING YOUR BEER ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!!", "YEAH CUT IT OUT!!!", "HEY WATCH IT!!!"  We knew it was time to leave when they started puking all over the place.  I guess to see something like shooting stars, it was worth it. I like the valley, but I hate HollyWeird! [This message has been edited by RedShoe (edited 11-18-2001).] |

I saw about 250-350 meteors, some as bright as flashbulbs, leaving what looked like smoke streaks in the sky.
One of the coolest fucking things I've ever seen! |

I live in pennsylvania. I first went out about 3:30 am, started seeing them in the first minute I was out. It was fuckin amazing. I'm still high from it. Some streaks across 30, nearly 40 degrees of the dome of the sky, mostly east to west, but lots of odd little streaks north to south. Some so bright they lit up the land like lightning. The peak was about 5:15 am. You could still see them as the sky was lighting up from dawn, only the brightest ones, burning this hot buttery yellow color. 350 is my low estimate, I was counting in my head 40 to 50 metors in about 10 minutes, but I knew as i was counting that I was only counting the biggest, there were probably at least double that if I count the short little wispy streaky ones. Lots of times there would be three or four big ones in the sky at once.
Definitely one of the wildest things I have ever seen. |
