Always go to court if it's highway patrol. They rarely take the time to go to court unless is a serious offence. Chances are he won't show and the ticket will get thrown out.

Plus, on the odd chance he gets challenged more often than normal, with the tailgating story, the judge is very likely to give you the minimums. Assuming he shows.

Yeah, I'll go to court but I'm sure the Judge will think it's just an excuse. The truth is my speed was excessive, no matter what my excuse is.

Tell them you were conducting research:
"There was a bug on my windshield, and I wanted to see how long he could hold on under accelerating wind conditions!"

If you get a laugh out of the judge, he might let you go on your good looks.

With any luck, the case will be S.O.L.'d and you will be out your time and a few bucks for a fine.

But if I were you, I'd get your hands on a good traffic lawyer, they are worth their weight in gold, I got nailed by the local cops here doing double the posted limits with no cars in either direction for a mile.

When the court date came, my attorney talked to the prosecutor, prosecutor and my lawyer talked to the officer, the officer right there made a nice new pile of folders, the ones that would plead guilty, the ones being continued, and my lonely file that was S.O.L.'d

I paid a small fine, got my license back, paid the lawyer, and chalked that one up to the best $150 I'd spent in a long time to watch that performance. :thumbsup

I got two speeding tickets in an hour and a half on I-10 once. And I was only going in the 80's MPH range.
