My Grandmother - who passed away earlier this month - was born in raised in Poland. Her entire family died at the hands of the Nazis.
I'm a huge fan of WWII, and my wife works in a hopstial in a town that is more like a retirement community. Six months ago she noticed a man who had a number on his arm. She asked about it, and was told they Nazis put the tattoo on him. She mentioned it to me, and the next time he came in my wife asked him if he would be interested in meeting with me for dinner. He agreed. I've taken him and his wife to dinner four or five times and heard some of the most incrediable stories. He's also shared a bunch of things with me, including a dagger with Swastika on it.Herschel Savage

I don't know any survivors personally, but I did visit Auschwitz in 1999 and must say it the saddest place I have ever been to. The negative energy there is pretty much not describable with words, you just have to go visit to experience it for yourself.
It was a weird day for me to say the least, I was in Poland for my job at the time and found some time to jump on a bus to the countryside to see the world most notorious death camp. And of course, the place itself was terribly awful but at the same time very interesting from a historical perspective. Seeing those ig rooms filed with murdered children?s shoes stacked to the ceiling is an image I will never forget.
The wackiest part of the day was the Polish bus driver blasted the Beastie Boys the whole way back to Krakow, not exactly the kind of thing you want to hear after visiting such a place. He was rocking out to ?Sabotage? driving down the road back from Auschwitz, what a freaking idiot.
But I do recommend if anyone is ever in Poland going and checking it out.Comment

Auschwitz makes it clear that civilized society cannot allow such atrocities.
That is why GWB should be praised for taking a stand and liberating Iraq, because Saddam's regime was also engaged in mass murder --and genocidal actions against the Kurds.Comment

PLEASE, don't compare the Holocaust to what Saddam maybe did...Originally posted by DaddyHalbucksAuschwitz makes it clear that civilized society cannot allow such atrocities.

On PBS yesterday night, there was this horrifying but informative documentary on Auschwitz and Triblenka ( 900k deads). The Nazis biggest problem was to dispose of the bodies as fast as they were killing them... Fucking sick. Was runned like a "killing factory"... Childs, women were killed right away most of the time, men kept to work till they dropped dead...
The Holocaust makes you wonder about the nature of mankind....I know that Asspimple is stoopid ... As he says, it is a FACT !
But I can't figure out how he can breathe or type , at the same time ....Comment

My best friends grandparents(both died last year). As I was looking around at his grandfathers graveside funeral , I looked around at all the survivors. Such a strong group. Still speaking yiddish. Reliving the horor as if it was yesterday. Each year their circle grows smaller. Their biggest fear is that when they are gone who will tell their stories.
My grandparents left Poland prior to the occupation. They always spoke Yiddish just so my sister and I would not know what they are saying. My friends mom runs the Yiddish department at a jewish college here so me and my dad are taking a course in May. Altleast I could do my part by keeping the lanuage alive and teaching it to my childrenSIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Growing up in Montreal in the 1960's/70's, with such a large Jewish population, it was hard to not bump into people who were there or had immediate family killed there. I have seen those tattoos on the forearm several times and heard stories from people who lost 2 or 3 generations of family.Comment

I have been to a different Nazi concentration camp called Sachsenhaussen nearby Berlin, I cannot imagine how those prisoners must have felt.
Thinking of Auschwitz being even worse is really mind boggling.
I have seen lots of pictures and film parts from Auschwitz and I'm still shocked when I see those terrible terrible suffering prisoners.
It's really one of the very worst things ever happend by humansComment

I've been to Dachau and to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. Both are worth the time to see to get an idea of what happened.
The real scary thing about the Holocaust is that it is not the first time Jews suffered from genocide in Europe but was only the latest and most notorius. Spend some time reading about Jewish History after the Romans took over Judea until modern times and you'll get a much better idea as to why Jews are so passionate about Isreal.Somebody stole my damn signture...Comment

I agree, these weird experiments and stuff. All because some of these people felt important cuz they made toothpaste before the world war started and they deserved (they thought) to do experiments on humans. Smearing glass splinters in open wounds...removing vaginal organs etc, beyond sick.Originally posted by Ron2k1I have been to a different Nazi concentration camp called Sachsenhaussen nearby Berlin, I cannot imagine how those prisoners must have felt.

If one of these people were still alive, they should let them sink very very slowly in a bath of acid.
